Captain G. E. T. Eyston has regained the world land speed record. He averaged ,357.5 miles an hour for two runs. On the first run he registered 356.44 miles an hour. The previous record was established on Wednesday- by^Mr; John Cobb, who averaged 350.20 miles an hour on two runs. On the first run he achieved a speed of 353.29 miles, an hour. Cobb’s runs broke the previous record set by Eyston,- at 345.49 miles an hour. . A mirage interfered - with Captain Eyston’s second run, in which a speed..of 358.57 .rpiles an fi hour was ‘ i Captain Ey s tom sa id _that it-seemed to obscure the end of the track. He was nervous and breathless when he finished, but said he eni oyed the run tremendously, - The car was still in the experimental stage, owing to changes made to decrease wind resistance,, but performed perfectly. He added that his future plans were indefinite,, but he might return in -1939, “unless I have made the Thunderbolt into a torpedo.” . ' . • , Mr Cobb is uncertain whether he will be attempting to break’ the record again this season, but Captain Eyston added that if he made more runs he would “wear out the Thunderbolt’s brakes.”
