PRE-ELECTION PROMISES
■TO THB EDITOB OB THB PRESS. Sir, —One wonders how the candidates for Labour are going to explain the failure of the Labour Party to carry out those rosy "promises which, before the last election, were scattered abroad with splendid generosity. There was the promise to reduce taxation, to reduce the rate of exchange, to eliminate the unemployment taxation, to lower the cost of living, to lower rents, and so on, almost without end. Not one of those promises has been kept. Mr Savage can say what he likes about leading the people out of the land of darkness into the light. This “Modern Moses” (I quote a copy of the “Standard” which adorned a cauliflower delivered to my home) has, I am afraid, become giddy and is leading his simple flock in circles. But, in the midst of all this confusion of thought, one thing stands clear —the failure of Labour to keep its preelection promises.—Yours, September 15, 1938.
