AMURI COUNTY HOUSING SCHEME
TO TBB EDITOB OB THB PRESS. Sir, —I wish to raise a number of points regarding the Government housing scheme as it applies to the Amur! County Council. I, as a builder and contractor, consider the cost unduly high owing to thte unreasonable specifications the tenderer must conform to. I wish to make clear it is not the Government or the Parliamentary Undersecretary in charge of the housing scheme I am criticising, but the council, which, for the purpose of building workmen’s cottages, has borrowed the necessary finance up to approximately £6OOO to build six houses. s Under the specifications which the council has. adopted, it now find% it impossible to build this nuifiber of houses for the sum mentioned. This being so, it has applied to the Government to eliminate one house, which in effect means that it is proposed to build five houses at the' cost of the money borrowed, approximately £6OOO, although there are builders prepared to accept contracts to build those same six houses up to the standard required by the State Advances Corporation at a cost of approximately £6OOO. My contention is that if the council adopted the specifications acceptable to the State Advances Corporation, it would be in possession of six first-class houses instead of five at the same cost, and they could be let at a cheaper rental to the tenant. The point is: will the Government give its permission to the council to build five houses, when the money borrowed was for the purpose of building six? I would be glad to have some enlightenment on this matter.—Yours, etc..
AMURI .RATEPAYER. Culverden, September 9. 1938.
