BIRDS DISTURBED BT * . VISITORS.
[THE PBESI Sped*! Service.]
DUNEDIN. September 14.
To protect 'the nesting-place of th* royal albatrosses at the. Otago Heads the . bird 'committee .of the Otago branch of the Royal Society of . New Zealand has erected a fence across the - headland enclosing, an . area of five or > six acres from which the public will be excluded for the next two months. ; This step," which has been taken within the permission of the. Otago Harbour','' Board, was considered essential because of the danger of the birds "being ’ .disturbed -by visitors. * ' ' ' ■ The arrival at the heads-last year of * 10 royal albatrosses was regarded as an event, of, first Importance in Otago scientific circles, because it offered the first opportunity ever given to science of studying the habits of the birds. Four nests were established, but -the birds were so worried by visitors who threw stones to make the albatrosses rise from their eggs that only one' nest y. remained. A chick was eventually . hatched in February, and as a result of, ■ measures that were taken for its pro- ' tection it was successfully reared. -The ; chick ,is still at the headland, and it is presumed' that it is being fed by the - parent birds.. - - : It is expected that during the next . two months the albatrosses will arrive 'at the heads to'establish their ; nests. It .is hoped that those which arrived, la: t year will return and that ,the chick; acting as a decoy,, will at- ~ tract others. For. this reason -die fence ■ has been erected. The protection of T the birds during the next few weeks t is regarded as essential, but later per, sons who-wish to see the birds will be able to do so' by obtaining -permit*'- - from the Otago Museum. -
