PENALTY ON UNPAID RATES

PROVISION FOR REMISSION

[From Our Parliamentary Reporter.!

WELLINGTON, September 13. Provision for the remission or postponement of payment of the statutory 10 per cent, penalty on unpaid local body rates is proposed in an additional clause to the Statutes Amendment Bill, contained in a supplementary order paper introduced by Governor-Gen-eral’s Message in the House of Representatives to-day. It is provided that the charge may be remitted in respect of any particular ratepayer or ratepayers, and may be exercised in respect of any rate or rates. The local authority must not exercise the power unless it is satisfied that hardship would otherwise be caused the ratepayer. The power may be exercised by the Minister for Lands in respect of rates made and levied by him under the authority of the Rangitaiki Land Drainage Act, 1910, the Hauraki Plains Act, 1926, and the Swamp Drainage Amendment Act, 1928.
