MINISTER’S ADVICE TO COUNCIL

The reconstruction of the main bridge over the north branch of the Waimakariri river at Kaiapoi was dealt with in a letter from the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) forwarded to the meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council last evening by Mr C. Morgan Williams M.P. The letter was received ana it was decided to thank Mr Williams for 6 Minister advised that £SOO had been provided in the current years estimates for preliminary investigation work. For some time the engineering staff the department had been busy on other important works and had not been able to give a great deal of time to this work. The survey of the bridge was in hand and as soon as the site information had been completed the preparation of plans for a new structure would be given attention. , , There were present: the Mayor line Rev. W. H. A. Vickery), Crs. A. E. Brown. R. C. Stewart, A. Gordon, H. Rinaldi. W. Hart, and J. P. Farrell. A letter from the Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, about the appointment of the borough traffic inspector (Mr W. J. Tait) to the staff of the Transport Department was taken in committee, the Mayor reporting afterwards that the matter had been referred to himself and the Town Clerk to obtain further information about the appointment. The Town Clerk. Christchurch City Council, wrote about the disposal of the proceeds from the sale of the History of Canterbury and advised that at the conference of local bodies it was explained that, in the event of a surplus, each contributing body would receive a refund pro rata to its contribution. , , The letter was received and it was decided to support the proposals submitted by the conference of local bodies about the centennial celebrations. , . .. A grant of £1 Is was made to the funds of the Kaiapoi Workers’ Educational Association class. The Canterbury Progress League was voted the usual grant of £5 5s to its funds. On the motion of Cr. Rinaldi, it was decided that the erection of the footbridge in Raven street be proceeded with.

On the, recommendation of the sewerage committee, it was decided to give notice of the council’s intention to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to raise the necessary loan for installing a sewerage and high pressure water supply in the borough. The committee’s recommendation that all areas shown on the preliminary plan be included in the scheme was also adopted.
