CRICKET

CHRISTCHURCH SUBURBAN

ASSOCIATION

MERCANTILE SECTION NOT

FAVOURED

A proposal to form a mercantile section of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association for teams representing business firms was rejected at the annual meeting of the association last evening. The proposal was supported by several delegates,- who expressed the view that the teams concerned were faced with special difficulties and might consider forming an association of their own, but there was a substantial majority against the proposal when it was put to the vote. Satisfaction with the year’s activities was expressed by the president, Mr T. E. H. King. The association, he said, was now an integral part of cricket. A record had been reached with 42 affiliated clubs and 1251 registered players. The number of fixtures showed that all grades had been well catered for. “We must keep hammering away to get more recognition for our players in representative matches,” said Mr W. G. Chapman, after Mr D. N. Stokes, a Canterbury representative player, had been welcomed back as a delegate to the association. The secretary (Mr W. C. Aitken). Affiliation was granted to three new clubs, Grosvenor, Fleming’s, and Macduff’s. . A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr V. L. Barnford, president of the Waltham Cricket Club, who died recently. The statement of receipts and payments for the year, which showed a credit of £BO 2s lid, and the balancesheet, which showed an excess of assets over liabilities of £135 17s lid, were stated by the honorary treasurer, Mr S. Cawtheray, to indicate a satisfactory position. Officers Elected The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr J. E. Fleming; president, Mr S. Cawtheray; vice-presidents, Messrs W. H. Down, P.
