LAWN TENNIS
ANNUAL MEETING OF Sumner club Mr I. J. Wilson presided at the annual meeting, of the Sumner Tennis Club. Members stood as a mark of sympathy with the relatives of Messrs T. Newburgh and Thornton. The annual report stated that from a financial point of view the year had been satisfactory. Because of the efforts of Mrs G. P. Evans, the interests of junior members had been looked after. The social side of the club’s activities was very successful, and matches and tournaments had been well supported.
Mr Franklin, of the Umpires’ Association, addressed the meeting on the objects of the association. It was decided that the club should give its support, to the scheme and pay the subscriptions of any member joining the body. The opening day was fixed for September 24, and it was decided to hold a dance in the evening. A recommendation was made to the match committee to arrange the club matches on a tournament basis.
The following officers were elected: — Patron, Mr J. E. Tait; president, Mr C. L. Allen; vice-presidents, Messrs R. N. C. Hill, H. Thomson, L. Rudkin, I. J. •Wilson, and L. K. Jones; delegates, to Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs H. Thomson and R. N. C. ‘Hill; management committee, Mesdames R. W. Gale, I. J. Wilson, Messrs C. Berwald, W. B. Owen, E. Huston; secretary, Mr J. W. Stevens; treasurer, Mr C. H. Francis; auditor, Mr E. Huston; captain, Mr I. J. Wilson; women’s captain, Miss G. Thomas; match committee, Misses M. Armstrong and M. Whitfield, Messrs G. A. Webb, A. W. Bishop, and A. G. Rose. Votes of appreciation were passed to the retiring president (Mr W. B. Owen) and the caretaker (Mr M. Donaldson).
