SENIOR FIYE-A-SIDE COMPETITION

The Canterbury Hockey Association’s senior grade five-a-side competition was played at Burwood Park on Saturday afternoon. All other % grades five-a-side matches were played on June 6, but owing to representative matches against Otago and Southland, the senior grade was held over. Six teams entered for Saturday’s' games, and instead of the usual knock-out principle five rounds were played and the winner decided on points gained. Trinity went through the contest unbeaten, winning four matches and one drawn. Following are the results of the games;— First Round Technical 2, Selwyn 1. Sydenham B 2, Trinity 2. HORNBY WOMEN BEAT UMPIRES • In the annual match for the Revenge Shield, pl'ayed at Hornby on Saturday, the Hornby Women’s Hockey Club beat the umpires in a high scoring match by 9 goals to 7, and retained the shield. The match was fast and keenly contested throughout, but better team work by the winner’s forwards gave the side an advantage which it held for most of the game. For Hornby goals were scored by Misses Mary McKenzie (7) and G. McKenzie (2). W. Gracie (2), C. Bellamy. F. A. Iggo, J. Hocking, P. Cornish, and E. Densom scored for the umpires. AUCKLAND RETAINS SHIELD WELLINGTON BEATEN BY SIX GOALS TO TWO ((PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEORAU.I AUCKLAND, September 11. In a fast and exciting hockey match, Auckland retained the challenge shield yesterday, defeating Wellington by 6 goals to 2. The half-time score was 1-all. In spite of the speed and skill of the Wellington forwards, where Browne and Edwards were outstanding, there was neither enough combination nor enough support from the halves to keep the team long on the attack. On the other hand. Auckland was constantly besieging the opposing, goal, apd played exceptionally well, showing excellent understanding throughout. The Wellington defenders. Perrin in particular, came through a great deal of work with credit.

Goals were scored for Auckland • by Roughton (2), Watson (2). Wyatt, and Howe, and for Wellington by Browne and Edwards. WELLINGTON JUNIORS '■ ' WIN r ■ CANTERBURY TEAM BEATEN BY ONE GOAL WELLINGTON, September 11. Though they won by only one goal to nil, the Wellington Junior men’s hockey representatives showed definite superiority over the Canterbury third B grade team on Saturday. During the greater part of the game Wellington had the advantage territorially, but the Wellington forwards were unable to finish off movements in the circle. The ground was very heavy and the jplayers had difficulty in keeping on their WESLEY TEAMS COMPETE PHILPOTT CUP WON BY WELLINGTON WELLINGTON, September 11. Wellington won the annual hockey tournament for the Philpott Cup by beating Masterton by 6 goals to 3 yesterday afternoon. The cup was presented some years ago by a former Wellington and New Zealand hockey representative and a former member of the Wellington Wesley Hockey Club, Mr R. Philpott, and his father, for competition between all Wesley hockey clubs in New Zealand. Wellington and Masterton were the only challengers. Wanganui. Christchurch, New Plymouth, and Auckland teams were unable to come to Wellington for the contest. The New Plymouth team, won the cup last year. The ground was very slippery and the players had considerable difficulty in maintaining their balance. This tended slow up the play. . NORDEN CUP GOES TO NELSON WANGANUI DEFEATED . WANGANUI, September 11. After staving off several challenges this season for the Norden Cup for hockey. Wanganui yesterday lost the cup to Nelson, being defeated by 3 goals to 1.
