RUGBY FOOTBALL
BROMLEY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT | | The eighth annual report and bal- ; ance-sheet of the Bromley Rugby • Football Club, to be presented at -the | annual meeting in the Bromley I schoolroom on Wednesday next, March ! 13, at 7.45 p.m., records a fairly sue- ] cessful season. The club entered one | team in the third grade of the Can- | terbury Rugby Union's competition, j and the team finished in fifth place, i The social side of the club's activi- . ties was highly successful, states the ; report, the series of socials run by the ! club in the Bromley schoolroom during the winter months proving very popular. The balance-sheet shows a credit balance of £36 6s sd. an increase of £ll 4s 5d on last year. Assets amounted to £SO Is sd, and there were no liabilities. The report states that the club is deeply grateful to all who assisted in any way, especially ihe coaches, Messrs T. B. Jackson and J. L. King. NEW BRIGHTON CLUB SUCCESSFUL SEASON REPORTED A successful year is recorded in the annual report of tbe : New Brigh- I ten Rugby Football Club. Four teams were entered in the union's competitions, and the junior schools' team was I runner-up in its grade. A club-room was opened during the season, but owing to lack of finance the committee was compelled to close it down. At some time in the luture when the club becomes more firmly established it is hoped to embark again on a scheme of this sort. Several dances were held during the season to help the club's funds, and a billiards tournament held through the courtesy of Mr A. Branch was a great success. | The committee this year arranged the inter-borough match, and a hard game saw New Brighton beat Sumner 15-0. The club's first season has resulted in a surplus of £2 18s 2d, which must be regarded as very satisfactory. The death of Mr R. S. Pearson, whose services were of great assistance to the club, is recorded. The committee thanks all who have helped the club by donations or in organising functions during the year, particularly the North Beach women's committee, the Pleasant Point Yacht Club, Messrs A. M. Chivers, J. O. Jameson, T. Tilleyshort, W. Taylor, A. Branch, W. McKenzic, S. Hegarty, and A. Dey. The report concludes with the hope that Rugby football will become firmly established in New Brighton. ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT DISCUSSES FINANCIAL PROBLEMS Details of the difficult financial situation of the Canterbury Football Association are given in the annual report of the association. Special reference is made to the large amounts owed by several clubs in subscriptions, and to the need for a special effort to improve the financial position this year. The report states that as intimated at the last annual meeting, all the liabilities outstanding at the end of the 1932 season, have been met and the creditors thanked for meeting in the spirit of compromise. The mortgages on English Park have been consolidated an2 rearranged for a period of five years from January 1, 1934, and the . interest paid up to July 1, 1934. A second mortgage has been executed, in favour of the New Zealand Football Association, Incorporated, in consideration of the loan of £350, with interest at the rate of 5 per cent., and repayment of £SO a year off the principal the first repayment being due | at the end of March. ; Revenue Small Tlie revenue from all sources was barely sufficient to meet the expenditure, despite the most careful administration. The committee regrets that it was unable to secure any revenue from cycling and athleiic organisations. Several meetings of club delegates wore held for the purpose of considering ways and means of increasing the revenue of English Park, but they were non-productive, and the incoming management committee will have to give the matter immediate and earnest consideration. The large amount of outstanding subscriptions owing by some of the clubs has caused the committee much anxiety, but the committee is reluctant to take any drastic action, as it is anticipated that the clubs concerned will eventually honour their obligations to the Canterbury Football Association. The incoming management committee is recommended to insist on all unfinancial clubs paying their affiliation and registration fees when entering teams for the 1935 season, and urge that immediate arrangements be made for the payment of arrears. Thistle Club's Success Special mention is made of the performance of the Thistle Club, which won all the trophies in the Christchurch first grade competition, as well as winning the South Island championship and competing in the New Zealand final of the Chatham Cup. The report states that the shield competitions attracted an entry of 43 teams over all grades. Thistle won the first grade competition, Western the second grade, Technical Old Boys the third grade, Young Men's Christian Association the fourth grade, Celtic the fifth grade, and Technical the sixth grade. Thistle won the English Cup knock-out competition. The committee suggests that the time is opportunity, for existing clubs to get in touch with the, officials of schools in their districts and arrange for the coaching of boys and for the drafting of the boys, as they leave school, into the clubs, with free membership for a year or two. By this means the clubs would be considerably strengthened and rapid progress made in the number of teams playing the Association game.
