WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION

WAIMAIRI-PAPANUI BRANCH Mrs Reynolds presided over a good attendance of members at the February meeting of the Waimairi-Papanui branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Mrs Reynolds presented prizes for a competition for the best frocks costing not more than ss, and she also offered to give a silver spoon as a prize for each month's competition. The competition for next, month will be for an article made from one yard of britway, and for the roll call members were asked to take knitted squares nine inches by nine inches. Mrs Nutt offered to provide a fleece for the making of a quilt at a later meeting-. It was decided that in future hostesses should be appointed in alphabetical order. The Styx-Harewood branch invited members to attend its annual picnic in the Botanic Gardens on Saturday. March 23 Mrs li. A. Nutt spoke of the aims and objects of the division, and gave a report of the recent conference. She emphasised the need for helping the community chest,. Hostesses were Mcsdames Garrett. Burrows, and Thomas. SW A WAN OA BRANCH The first of the monthly meetings of the Swannanoa branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Fanners' Union was held in the Swannanoa Hall, Mrs Paget presiding. There was a fair attendance. A competition for ladies old-time dresses resulted; —Miss J. Winter 1, Mrs Paget 2, Miss F. Winter 3. Much amusement was caused by a guessing competition of early photographs of members. 1)1 NSANDEIj Ii RANCH | The monthly meeting of thc-Dun-sandel branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was well attended, Mrs Gilbert presiding. The secretary gave a report of the executive meeting. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Buckcnham and with Mrs N. G. Scott in their present illnesses. A competition was held to guess the originals of early photographs, Mrs C. Wrioht, Mrs John Walker, and Mrs Chamberlain being first. The ccmpeiition for the best article made from a flour bag resulted: Mrs W. N. Walker 1, Miss Ivime 2, Mrs Chamberlain 3. A competition for the best workman's lunch resulted: Mrs Gilbert 1, Mrs Chamberlain 2. A competition for the best bloom resulted: Miss Mercer 1 and 2. Mrs Chamberlain 3. Mcsdames J. Wraight and W. Sheat and Miss Kime were the hostesses. ! SOI'TH BROOK BRANCH ! ! 1 The lirst meeting of the South-brook-Fiaxton branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the Coronation Hall, Southbrook, when there was a good attendance of members and iriends. The president, Mrs Rainey, occupied the chair. An invitation was received from ihe Oxford branch to att.nd a garden party on March 5, and also one from the Woodend branch inviting members to join them in a picnic at Mount Thomas on March 14. The entries for the competition for the afternoon, a plate of plain biscuits, were judged by Mrs .J. Boyd, and resulted as follows: —Miss D. Fraser 1, Miss L. Martyn 2, and Miss K. Mcintosh 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Burgess, C. Archer, and L. Martyn. A very interesting demonstration on tapestry work was given by Mrs L. Johns. Rangiora. who had on exhibition some beautiful work.

FIAI.SWFJ.I, JI'NIOR BRANCH | A meeting of the Halswcll junior branch of the Women's Division of the fanners' Union was held in the Halswell Hall, with Miss C. McConncll presiding. Miss McComiell appealed for helpers to assist at a fete to be held in Ihe Young Men's Christian Association building next month. It was announced that the competition for the next meeting will be for the best cheese straws. Arrangements were made for the birthday party of the branch. TAI TAI'L-GREENJ'AKK BRANCH The Tai Tapu-Greenpark branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Tai Tapu Hall, there being a large attendance of members. Mrs G. Henderson presided, and welcomed several new members. It was decided to hold the annual meeting at Ladbrook's next month. Mr Humm and Miss Painter attended by invitation and gave interesting demonstrations on floral work suitable for flower shows. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs Matthew Barnett, who is seriously ill, and a gilt of flowers was sent to her frcm the meeting. The president congratulated Miss R. McLachlan on winning the prize for the best essay on the young women's meetings. In the competition for the best jar of apple jelly, the following were the winners:—Mrs J. Wills 1, Mrs Tanner 2, Mrs J. Ryan 3. At the conclusion of the meeting, supper was served to members of the Farmers' Union. STYX-H AUEWOOI) BRANCH Mrs R. Jones presided at the March meeting of I ; he Styx-Hare-wood branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, held in the Highstead Road Mission Hall. Two new members were welcomed. Reference was made to the pleasant time spent by a number of members who attended the Waimairi farmers' field day activities at Lyttelton on March 4. The roll call "talks on any one article in the creed," proved very interesting. A competition for a jug cover was won by Mrs E. Smith 1, and Mrs Salkeld 2. Mrs Foster (Papanui), who was one of the successful competitors in the recent garden competition, gave a demonstration of wreath-making. Hostesses were Mesdames Winfield, Salkeld, C. Smith. W. Newton, and Mills. KOWAI 15 U ill I Mrs Smart presided at the monthly meeting of the Kowai Bush branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Votes of sympathy were passed with Mrs Cox and Mrs Stratford in their recent bereavement. Preliminary arrangements were made for the annual meeting to be held in April, and for the second birthday party of the branch. Competitions resulted:—Best bottle of preserved fruit, Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Faulkner 2, and Mrs H. Belcher 3; best buttonhole, Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Smart 2, and Mrs Starr 3. Mrs R. M. Johnson gave an instructive demonstration on the vacuum process of bottling fruit. Members expressed sympathy with Miss Douglas, who has been ill. Mes-
