WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
KAIAPOI The Kaiapoi branch of the Women's Institute held a hostess afternoon at the Grey Raven Hall last week. The event of the afternoon was a mannequin parade staged by members of the institute. During the parade, which proved very popular and was watched with great interest, a programme of music was played by Mesdames R. Gill and H. Rinaldi. After afternoon tea, items were given by Miss E. Thorne, Miss K. Mathews, and Mrs A. L. Jones, and a play by Mesdames L. G. Bilclifl'e, R. J. Smith and Miss C. Reid.' At the conclusion, the president of the branch, Mrs A. Blakeley, in expressing appreciation of the large attendance, thanked Miss Dwyer and Miss Goldthorpe for their assistance in supervising the parade, also Mr E. Gray, who had provided the hall and hot water free of charge and arranged the tables. The hostesses for the afternoon were: Mesdames R. J. Smith, S. J. Richards, Hunter, Miller, G. Gill. MOUNT PLEASANT A well-attended meeting of the 1 Mount Pleasant Women's Institute 1 was held at Mrs Edgar's residence on i Wednesday, when the president, Mrs t M. Morten, presided. Mrs J. Rich- ' ards gave an interesting lecture on . handcrafts, and exhibited many fine examples of her work. Lecturers for . the coming months were announced. ' Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Morten, Edgar, Hughes, Turland, Johansen, and Miss Hood-Williams. ASH LEY At the monthly meeting of the Ash- : ley Women's Institute, Miss J. Croft, i: presided over a good attendance. A vote of sympathy with Mrs R. Peach, in her illness, was passed. A good sale of worl: from the Institute for the . Blind was reported, and Mrs G. S. ■ Smith was thanked for her efforts in ; (his direction. Miss Croft and Mrs H. ' Jones were appointed delegates to the ' annual meeting of the North Canter- ! bury Federation. Arrangements were completed for the Women's Institute 1 picnic to be held at the Botanic Gar- : dens, Christchurch. Nominations for i the committee to be elected at the | annual meeting, were received. An; interesting demonstration on pen- i painting was given by Mrs D. L. Rob- j ertson. Songs were sung by Mesdames F. L. Lowe, H. H. Smith, and D. L. Robertson. Competitions resulted as follows:—Bowl of annuals. Miss Z. Beattie 1, Miss J. Croft 2: slice of Christmas cake, Mrs H. Ludeman I, Miss Z. Beattie 2; jar of raspberry jam, Mrs A. Schmidt 1, Miss J. Croft 2. Miss Z. Beattie 3. The hostesses were: Mrs and Miss Bradshaw, Mrs Baird. and Miss Beattie. PREBISLETON At the monthly meeting of the 1 Prebbleton Women's Institute held in the public library on Tuesday afternoon Mrs G. Askin presided. The president said that a progressive euchre party for the institute funds would be neld* on March 5, and that an institute picnic would be held at Coe's Ford on the second Saturday in March. Mrs C. Atkinson, who is leaving the district, was presented with a china vase in recognition of her work as an institute member. Mrs Atkinson expressed her thanks. A most interesting talk in the care of the hair and skin and a demonstration of setting the hair was given by Mrs S. Vaughan. of Christchurch. Mrs Vaughan was thanked for her lecture. She also .judged the month's competitions as follows: Specimen bloom, Mrs H. Prebble 1. Mrs J. Easterbrook 2, Mrs L. Gallagher 3: plain apron. Miss Bertha Hartnell 1, Mrs C. Atkinson 2. Mrs J. Easterbrook 3; open jam tart puff pastry, Mrs T. Coleman 1. Mrs C. Atkinson 2. j Mrs J. Easterbrook 3. j The hostesses for afternoon tea were Mrs W. Hands. Mrs W. Downey, and [ Miss Rita Russell. | AVAIKARI Mrs H. Phillips presided over a good attendance at the February meeting of the Waikari branch of the Women's Institute. Mrs Phillips and Mrs W. . Traill were elected delegates to represent the branch at the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Federation to be held in Christchurch in May. Two very interesting demonstrations were given during the evening, one on the making of scagrass stools by Mrs Basil Page, and one on wool-mat making by Mrs S. Almo.ya. of Christchurch. The monthly competition, for the best article mads from old stockings, was won by Mrs D. Mowatt, with Miss Alice Trounce second. It was decided that nominations for president ! and members of committee for the | new year must reach the secretary not later than Tuesday, March 5. The j hostesses were Mrs W. Kencaly and 1 Mrs S. Boon. PREBBLETON Mrs G. Askin presided over an attendance of 35 members at the last meeting of the Prebbleton Women's Institute, held in the public library, j Notice was given ol the annual meeting to be held at; the end of this momh. and that a picnic had been arranged to take place at Coe's Ford on March 9. Opportunity was taken to present a china vase to Mrs C. Atkinson, an active member of the institute, who is removing to Southbrook, and to wish her happiness and success in her new home. Mrs Atkinson briefly expressed her thanks. Mrs S. Vaughan. of Christchurch. gave an interesting talk on the care of the hair and skin, and demonstrated the setting of hair. She was cordially thanked for her kindness in sparing time to visit the institute. Mrs Vaughan also judged the month's competitions, the results of which were:— Specimen bloom, Mrs H. Hands, and Miss Rita Russeil. ; ( ORE Pi AY The monthly meeting of the Gore Bay Women's Institute was held in the schoolroom, Gore Bay. Mrs A. Brewins presided. One new member was proposed. A letter was received from the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association expressing thanks for the sale of their goods. Nominations for the election of officers were received and a report of the group meeting was given. The results of the home competitions were:—Best potatoes grown from two seed: Mrs A. Williamson 1, Mrs W. Munro 2, Mrs G. Walls 2. Best article made from oneyard of cretonne: Mrs G. Walls 1, Mrs A. Brewins 2, Miss D. Collins 3. The hostesses were Mrs H. Meyers and Miss E. Williamson, whose competition for "hidden fruits" resulted: Mrs W. 4. J. McClintock and Miss K. Brewins<
