FRENCHMAN BREAKS I RECORDS TAUIS AND POUSSAKI) AT HASTINGS (PRESS ASSOCIATION TEI.EURAII.I HASTINGS, March 8. The third public appearance in New Zealand of the French champions, Jean Taris and Emiie Poussard, attracted a record attendance at a swimming carnival in Hastings this evening. Again Taris beat G. Bridson's New Zealand quarter-mile record, his time in fresh, cold water, being smin 4 2-ssec, and the existing record being beaten by 10 seconds. Taris beat his Hamilton time by 11 3-5 seconds, only 5 1-5 seconds lower than his sensational effort in the tepid salt water at Auckland. In the 220 yards, Taris beat N. Crump's New Zealand record by 1 3-5 seconds, doing the distance in 2min 21sec. In both events Watkins (Hastings), New Zealand mile champion, and D. P. Lindsay (Danne.virkei, New Zealand mile and half-mile recordsholder, were easily beaten by the

Frenchman. The Hastings man shaded Lindsay in each event, doing 440 yards in smin 27sec, to lower the Hawke's Bay provincial record by 12 seconds. Poussard provided a magnificent 15 minutes' exhibition of diving. CARNIVAL ON MONDAY VISIT OF FRENCH CHAMPIONS Next Monday at the Tepid Baths the Canterbury Swimming Centre will conduct an international carnival on the occasion of the appearance of the Frenchmen, Taris and Poussard. Taris, who has held live world's records, is the middle distance champion of Europe, and finished second in the quarter mile at the last Olympic Games. Last Monday night at Auckland he covered the quarter mile in less than five minutes, a feat which has never before been performed in New Zealand before. His style of swimming is said to be unorthodox and swimmers are anxiously awaiting his appearance in order to study his stroke, which has produced such fine results for him. Poussard, who is the champion diver of Europe, last year competed in 19 European championships of which he won 17. When in Australia recently he defeated H. Tickle on both occasions when they met. His diving

in the North Island astounded the public and the reports which have been received state that nothing like it has ever been seen in the Dominion before. D. H. Symes, the New Zealand quarter mile champion, will compete against Taris over a quarter mile, together with other prominent Canterbury swimmers. Mrs E. C. Isaacs, of Dunedin, a former New Zealand titleholder, is coming up to compete against Poussard; local diving champions will also be competing. Included in the programme is a first-class 100 yards handicap and a number of other handicap events and the carnival should be the best seen in Christchurch for many years. Seats may be reserved at Lange's, Bank corner. WAIMATE club Tim Waunate Swimming Club held a very interesting evening sports meeting at the -Municipal Baths, when there was a good attendance.
