ELECTIONS IN MAY
CANDIDATES FOR LOCAL ; BODIES NOMINATIONS FOR THE THREE BOROUGHS Keen interest is already being shown in the boroughs surrounding the city in the selection of candidates for mayoral seats and positions on the councils. So far the work of interested organisations and individuals has not progressed far enough to produce complete lists of candidates. The position of the New Brighton mayoralty is still in doubt. It had been announced by the present Mayor, Mr E. A. M. Leaver, that he did not intend to seek re-election, but since that announcement Mr Leaver has been approached by several deputations, it is stated, and asked to reconsider his position. Another deputation waited on him last evening with the same request. Mr Leaver said yesterday that he had nothing further to say about his position, but in well-informed circles in New Brighton it is thought that he might be persuaded to stand again. A new mayoral candidate, Mr J. K. Worrall, has definitely announced his intention to seek election as Mayor of New Brighton. Mr Worrall is a present councillor of New Brighton, and besides owning property in New Brighton has a business in the city. He is a well-known administrator in Rugby League in Canterbury. It is stated that Mr E. Smith, a former unsuccessful candidate for the New Brighton mayoralty, has also announced his willingness to be nominated again for the election. It appears that the only names which have so far been definitely put forward for the New Brighton Borough Council election are those mentioned as candidates for the Unemployed Workers' Association. These include Mrs H. Williams, who has been promised the support of the unemployed, and Messrs F. C. Pryke, L. Dobson, and W. D. Kennedy. Riccarton It is understood that Mr H. S. S. Kyle. M.P., who was elected Mayor of Riccarton unopposed at the last municipal elections, will stand again. Up to the present little has been said about prospective new borough councillors. The Riccarton Citizens' Association decided early in February to nominate a full ticket Ceight councillors), and it was stated yesterday that the present representatives of the association on the council would be asked to stand again in May. Position at Sumner It appears that there will be at least two new faces on the Sumner Borough Council after May, for two of the present councillors, Messrs D. F. Oldridge and J. E. Tail, stated yesterday that they were definitely not standing again. Mr H. W. Harris has not considered whether he will seek re-elec-tion; Cr. IT. E. Kcnnelt will seek nomination for a further term on the council; Crs. H. L. Wiggins and A. Holden staled yesterday that they were undecided, and the position of Cr. C. Hart could not be ascertained. It was slated yesterday that therewere rumours in the borough that Cr. G. F. Allen might be a candidate for the Sumner mayoralty. Mr W IT Nicholson, the present Mayor, said yesterday that it would be < ; i week or two before he could give a final decision about whether he would stand again. He had not considered the matter yet.
