! j CHANGES ON RANKING j ! LISTS j ! VOl-XC; PLAYERS ADVANCE I ! I | |liy CROSS COURT.! j The Canterbury ranking lists have seen more changes this year than for many years past. Partly this is attributable to the withdrawal of some of the older players, but it is a matter for congratulation that many young and promising players have steadily worked their way up the lists this season. The ranking season closed last Ttmrsdav, but several challenge matches" have yet to be played. The position of the lists yesterday, with the ranking of the players at the commencement of the season given in parenthesis, was as follows:-- | MEN'S LIST \ 1. C. Angas ih. 2. 11. Dvmond ca). 15. A. R. Cant, (tic -?. B. A. Barrer <4i. 5. J. W. Arnold (ID. 0. R. A. Young (14). 7. D. C. Johnston < o>- j 8. I. J. Corich (ISi. i 9. B. D. Duffield (lfi). ! 10. E. E. England (12). 11. C. F. In recent matches Corich (challenger) beat DulTield for eighth place, 6-4, 4-0, (i-4; Deans beat McGillivray (chal- , longer) for twelfth place. 4-6, 6-1. 6-4; Miss T. Poole (challenger) beat MissRudkin for first place, 0-3, 8-C: and ; Miss Wright beat Miss Senior (chal-I longer) for tenth place, 6-4. 6-2. Many Withdrawals. Challenge matches yet to be played I are as follows:-- j Men's list—Cant v. Dymond, Barrer j v loser. Young v. Arnold, Penfold v. England. Pattinson v. Fisher, Ford v. loser, W. G. Maunsell, v. Martin, T. j W. Walls v. loser. ; Women's list—Miss 1. i'oole v. Miss Rudkin, Miss Dickey v. Mrs Hayward. ; With the players who have not. taken part in ranking list play to> : some lime, these "withdrawals' would i make a L'irlv imoressive list ot their i own and it 'is to be regretted that so j many are unable or unwilling to j enter into ladder competition. Among ! these mav be mentioned I. A. Seay. D i F Glanville. and T W. Patterson, Miss : M. Wake. Miss P.. Gould, and Miss N i Bishop. , ! It might be argued that the presence: of these players on the ranking lists j would be of value in giving the im-j proving players experience. lor al , i those mentioned are still capable ot ■ rlfein" verv fine {■■ tmi.-, but those | ' voi'mr'" w!m have recently i from jiaooi ranks are mm i 'getting any amount nf exiienence Ujl ■■ inter-club competitions and club and j ; provincial champion-hips. ■ ! Corich's Good Itctord j ! Because of the number of withi drawals from the men's list the un- ! provrmuit .-hown bv many player.- is i largely fictitious. Nevertheless, some ; of-the vouoner olavers have made re- ! markabie progress during tlu season. I Among these must be mentioned Corich. who gained 10 places (defeatI ing livi olavers originally ranked : above himL Penfold. who improved iby nine, and Dullield. who improved by seven. There are several new names on the list, and at least two of them, R. G. Pattinson—the New Zealand junior champion—and M. McGillivray should improve now that they are gaining experience There has been little alteration at the head of either list, but there have b<=en a fairly large number of matches between the leading players. Unfortunately there has been little, if any. increase in enthusiasm for ranking matches among the women players. An effort has been made this year to enforce the ranking list rules, and the i necessity for plavei's their 1 matches within the stipulated time has j enabled the improving players >o make much more rapid progress than has hitherto been possible. The management committee will probably be given power at the next general meeting of the association to extend the ranking list season in future years if such a "step is considered desirable. j The Trophy Matches i The Canterbury teams to defend the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield and the Kathleen Nunncley Casket were announced in "The Press" yesterday morning, and with the news that Miss Sherris is definitely unable to play against Auckland it becomes more and more apparent that Canterbury is going to be hard put to it to retain the Nunneley Casket, which was won so narrowly from Wellington last month. Canterbury should have less difficulty in the defence of the shield, but the Auckland team is of a strength sufficient to make the match very interesting. Canterbury tennis enthusiasts will have a feast of good tennis at Wilding Park on the afternoons of March 15 and 16. In the two matches will be seen a number of the leading men and women players of the Dominion. PENDARVES V.
