SAILING
* IDLE ALONG CHAMPIONSHIP A WIN FOR DOLPHIN ' The large crowd of yachting: supporters and local week-end residents who were present at Kairaki yesterday afternoon to see the sailing race for the Idle Along championship of Canterbury, were treated to some splendid sailing. Conditions were good, the river was at its best, and both contestants and spectators enjoyed the race. The winner was the Waimakariri Power Boat and Sailing Club's boat Dolphin, which was ably handled by E. G. Moor (skipper) and K. Whitmore (spinnaker hand). Dolphin went to tho front in the second round and continued to increase her lead, winning easily. Tho Starters Kleven boats started in the race, and all completed the course with the exception of the Kedcliffs boat, Poseidon, which, carrying 30 square feet less sail than the others, had no chance and- retired at the end of tlifi first round.
The race started at 1.32 p.m. in a fresh north-east breeze and a flood tide. In the narrow space of the starting line there was a jumble of boats when the gun fired, and there were several narrow escapes from fouling. The boats made a long board to port to the concrete blocks and then had a lead for the down river buoy. Alice, the holder of tho trophy, took the lead, with tho Iryttelton boat, Listless, in second position. Listless endeavoured to set a spinnaker forward on the lead, but had trouble with it and dropped back, Dolphin going to the front Tissiman again tried to set a spinnaker on Listless, but the sail gybed and had to be taken in. The first three boats around the buoy were Alice, Lolita, and Dolphin, in that order. The boats ' had a fast lead up to the blocks, most of them carrying spinnaker forward. Lolita overhauled Alice and took the lead, with Dolphin and Muratai following. After passing the blocxa the boats made a fast run for the Dunn's Bank buoy. They made a splendid sight, racing up the river, wing and wing, on the top of a full tide. Nearing the buoy Dolita and Dolphin were almost level. The Lyttelton boat rounded four seconds ahead of Dolphin, which was eight seconds in front of Hiker and Muratai. The others were all close at hand. ' Dolphin in the Lead Shnrllv alter rounding, Dolphin weathered Lolitu. At the blocks Dolphin had a gooo lead on Lolila, with Alice and Listless following, Listless having improved her position. At tin. down-river buoy on the Bpcoml round, Dolphin had tuiin 45»ec on Ijolila. which wns linin ahead of Alice. Dolphin continued to incrcaso her lead and was several minutes ahead of Lolita at the completion of the second round. The tide was now on the ebb. At the downriver buoy in the* third round. Dolphin was 3min iiOsec ahead of Lolita. with Alice another 25sec later. Listlesa was only 15sec astern of Alice. Tho race was now Dojphin's, barring mishaps, but there were none. ' Listless weathered Alice and took third position. 'The finish was:

RACES AT LYTTELTON BERYL STACEY TROPHY Two sailing rates were held nt Lyttelton on" (Saturday afternoon under moderate conditions. Tlio race for boats 14 feet and over fur the Beryl Stacey trophy was won by the 14-footer Avenger, which also won thi' trophy last. year. The Graham Cup, sailed under Takapuna class conditions, was competed for for the iirst time and was won by Maperu. Race for Trophy There were 12 starters in the race for the Beryl Staeey trophy, which commenced at 2.4."> p.m. In the first round the yachts had the unusual experience of. having n following wind both ways. A very light southwester took them down to the Parson's (Jock buoy. As soon as they rounded the mark tho wind changed to north-east and spinnakers wore again hoisted for the run up the harbour. Opposite the bend of the pier the leaders lost the following wind and had to close-haul in a light south-westerly. Then tho wind came away from the north-east again and there wag a fresh breeze for the remainder of the race. Pastime led all the way. Slip was closely followed by Avenger in the first round, the centre-board boat rounding the pile only 10 seconds after tho keeler. In the second round Pastime drew ahead of Avenger, which was also overtaken by Marangi. Pastime and Marangi finished in that order, but were unable to concede the handicaps to others and tho placings were:— Avenger (R. Priddy), 20min, 4.32.40 .. 1 Elfin (J. T. Hobbs)/ 23min, 4.116,10 2 Waterheetle (W. Gilrny), 21min, 4.35.10, and Jean (R. Hendrv), 2]Jroin. 4.3;;.40 (equal) ..3 Taknpuna Class Race The race for the Graham Cup attracted eight starters. In the first round the boats had difficulty in rounding the reef in the flukey winds, but made good time later when a fresh north-easterly set in. Maperu gained a good lead at the reef in the first round and continued to increase the lead in the second. She won rather easily from the scratch boat, Rascal. The result was:— Maperu (J. Dowell and A. Donnelly) 4rain, 4.30.0 . . . ' 1 Rascal (H. Hannah), scr, 4.31.38 .'. Echo (J. Masson), 6min, 4.37.56 .. 3 The other starters were Wairuna, Waterwitch, Sandy, Falson, and Invader.
