BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM

REPORT TO MEETING OF FETE COMMITTEE A largely attended meeting oi the l general committee of the Christchureh Boys' High School gymnasium fete was held on Monday evening in the Old Boys' Football Club rooms, Mr R. C. Abernethy, president of the Old Boys' Association, being in the chair. Amongst those present were the headmaster Mr G. J. Lancaster, and representatives of the Addington, Spreydon, Papanui, City. St Albans, Merivale, Boys' High School staff, Riccarton, Cashmere, and the Old Boys' Association committees.

Mr Abernethy outlined the financial result of the recent fete and other subsidiary efforts to raise the funds necessary to build the gymnasium, and reported that a sum of £6OO was now in sight. While this was a long way below the required amount, he said, a very pleasing ancl most encouraging feature was that a fine and enthusiastic body of parents had gathered together and was keen for closer organisation. This alone augured well for the attainment of their objective and justified the untiring work done by the organiser and the executive. Many district representatives made suggestions for future activities, and it was unanimously decided that various functions should be held during the year, winding up with a one-day carnival on December 14. Mrs Kent-Johnston spoke of the desirability of forming a parents' association, and said that she thought a body of this kind could do a great amount of good work for the school. The headmaster thanked all those who had helped in various activities leading up to the fete, and in the fete itself. He approved of the idea of forming a parents' association, he said, but its formation must be the result of a spontaneous movement from the parents themselves. A properly or-

ganised body of this kind, he thought, would be a great asset to the school. The following sub-committee was set up to go into the question of forming a parents' association:—Mrs W. F. Kent-Johnston (convener), Mrs J. H. W. Sheppard, and Messrs C. E. Anderson, G. F. Myers. A. D. Ford, and J. T. Burrows. It was decided to hold another meeting of those interested in the gymnasium at the Old Boys' Football Club rooms, on Monday, March 11, to draw up a programme of functions to be held during the year. The chairman, in closing the meeting, thanked all those who had worked so hard for the success of the fete.
