MEMBERS OF BYRD EXPEDITION
ANXIOUS TO RETURN HOME Members of the Byrd Antarctic expedition who are still engaged in work on the ships of the expedition in Dunedin are anxious to continue the voyage and return home as quickly as possible, it was stated in Dunedin last Saturday. They have been away now for nearly 18 months, and as time goes on the prospect of return becomes naturally more and more attractive. "When Sandy Hook and the Statue of Liberty come into view and I can see my wife standing on the wharf to greet me, it will be the finest sight I have seen for many a year," one member is reported to have said.
There is still a good deal of work to be done in Dunedin, however, and the boats are not expected to get away for a few days yet. In the meantime they are the centre of interest for large crowds every day. Principal attention is paid to the dogs, the "huskies," which are chained in rows along the decks and reply to any advances with the greatest friendliness. The penguins, which spend their time in a special ice-chest on board the Jacob Ruppert, can be seen through a small window, beside which at times is formed a queue of sight-seers; and the aeroplanes of the last expedition which have been brought back are also attracting a good deal of attention.
