MOTORING.

AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. The council of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last night, Mr W. 11. Carey presiding. Mr F. W. Johnston, at the chairman's request, reported regarding the proposal to set up a Publicity Committee for the wholo of New Zealand, the North Island and South Island Motor Unions to combine for the purpose. The main object was to arrange tor any joint political action necessary. The opinion of each Association iitfiliatccl with the South Island Motor Union was being sought. Mr B. Falck said that the Association's share of the proposed fund would be £BO or £9O. He thought that the idea was a good one, the only question was whether they could carry out the fiuance. He felt certain that they should have a joint political committee.

Mr F. W. Freeman outlined the discussion oil tlie matter, which took place at the recent meeting of the North Island Motor Union. After discussion it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the executive, the meeting expressingsympathy with the object in view, though believing that in the South Island it could bo attained at less expenditure than was involved in the North Island Motor Union's scheme.

Shipment of Cars Tjy Terry Steamer. The Patrol Committee reported regarding the shipment of cars between Wellington .and Lyttelton, and with reference to the proposal of the North Island Motor Union to inaugurate a scheme between the two unions for shipping of members' cars in the ferry steamers, that the scheme was not practicable. Probably it would be a distinct benefit to travelling motorists leaving "Wellington, where the city is also the' port, but in the case of Christchurch it was fourteen miles from the port. They had only one offici.il available, a 11J the trip to port either to take delivery or ship ears would enable him to'ma';? onlv one journey morning or afternoon. To increase the staff to render an efficient service would be extremely costlv and far beyond any revenue thev might be able collect from other A c sociations. The chairman remarked that the sc-homo might be practicable if they, had the tunnel road. (Laughter.) The repert was adopted. Roads Committee. The Iliads Committee reported that an estimate of £l5O had been sent forward to the Highways Board in respect of direction signs on main highways. _ Mr Morris had brought up the question of the narrowness in several places of the Lyttelton-Sumner road, stating that the Lyttelton Borough Council had had some of the worst bends improved by the painting of white lines in the centre. He also stated that there were places too narrow to allow two vehicles to nass with safety. Tt was recommended that the secretary interview Mr F Langbein with regarcf to unemployment relief labour being used to improve the narrow places, also to have reflectors ; nstalled similar to those on the Mount Cargill road in Otago so as to make the road safer in foggy weather. Mr Morris had .ilso spoken of the bad driving on the road and considered that steps should be taken to have some of the offenders dealt with. Tt was recommended thpt the Wai rewa County Council 'should be asked to have the new bridge at- Price's Vnllev painted white. Tt was recommended that.the Wa:oarn Countv Council bo asked to have n din in the Main HigWav close to the Humnui ■ Hotel on the south side of +he Hurnmii bridge improved. The report was adopted. Other Matters. The Road and Patrol report for February showed that the mileage had been UIS; four cars had been assisted; and 19 new members had been enrolled. New members elected totalled 51, making the total to date 310.
