LIFE-SAVING.
COMPETITION FOR THE WIGRAM BOWL. The New Brighton Surf Club held its annual competition for the Wigram Bowl on •Saturday afternoon. The competition is open to schoolboy members and to club members eligible for tho Benson Shield. Thirteen teams entered, the ages of tho 52 cignpetitors ranging from 8 years to 17 years. No times were taken in this contest, the points being awarded for general smartness and resuscitation. On Saturday the easterly wind was cold, the tide was out but rising, and the breakers heavy enough to call for considerable endurance on the part of the boys. Tl \ e following were the officials: —Judge, Mr G. Pearce; timekeeper, Mr A. Hughes; referee, Mr \V. H. Benson; official steward, Mr L. C. Matson; instructor, Mr 0. A. Cooper. In' announcing the' results after the members of the teams and their parents had been entertained at tea, Mr Benson said all the teamß had done remarkably well, as was shown by the points awarded, which varied only by 4i between the 13 teams. In presenting the trophy to Beltman E. Aynsley (aged 10), of the No. 9 team, the wmnors, lie congratulated the team on the S m ndid demonstration it had given. The placings were as follows:— ?«o. 3 Team—ls. Aynsley (belt), A. Ayns- . ley (line), A. Richards (reel), and . R.. Bisman (subject), 865 points .. 1 *o. 1 Team—J. Cocks (belt), Sam Besley (line). It. Bisman (reel), and I. McIntosh (subject), 80 points •■ t io - 5 Team—N. Angel (belt), A. Cocks dine), A. Duff (reel), and W.-Has-tings (subject), 86 points • • + Cattermole (line). H. So. 11 Team, and No. 13 -Team (equal), 5; No. 2 Team, No. 7 Team, and No. 32 Team (equal), 8: No. 8 Team. 11; .No. 6 Team, 12; No. 4 Team, 13. Beltman's Championship Postponed. The competition for the Canterbury beil■ni'.n a championship was postponed, and will bo held at North Beach on Sunday next at - p.m. Of tho 10 teams entered, five had competed when tho officials of the Canterbury Surf Association decided that in view of the noavy drift and" the impossibility of anchor-. i"B -Hie buoy the competition could not ho allowed to proceed.
