* , AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. TWO BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES (MESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, March 12. The New Zealand amateur athletic championships were concluded in the Domain today, in fine weather, before an attendance of over 7000 people. Two brilliant performances were registered in the 220 yds and 440 yds by Elliot (Auckland) and Black (West Coast), respectively. Elliot's time was the best ever done by a New Zealander, and was only eclipsed by l-ssec by Simpson (America) last year. Black beat the quarter-mile record, held jointly by Parker (America) and Golding (Australia), by 2-ssec, and the previous best New Zealand performance by 1 l-issec. These two records, combined with Elliot's 9 4-ssec for the 100 yds on the first day, which equalled the record, are all being sent forward for recognition. The women's 100 yds record was equalled by Miss Kench (Wellington). A feature' of the cycling ovents was the superiority Bhowu by the Canterbury riders, Grose accounting for all throe championships. Shield points are: —Wellington, 48; Auckland, 39; Canterbury, 27; Otago, 25; West Const, 15. Results;— 120 YARDS HURDLES. The Sumner Athletic Club held the last meeting of the season on Saturday afternoon. With fine weather there was a good attendance and keen interest in the events, which were, to a large extent, to decide the team to be selected for the inter-borough contest at New Brighton. The programme included the presentation of tho club cups. Mr P. Dick, who supervised the events, at the conclusion of the meeting asked Mrs T. (PRBSS ASSOCIATIOK TELEGRAM.) IN VERCARGILL, March 13. The secondary school sports, held yesterday at Rugby Park, which was in great order, wore a decided success. A large crowd was present and thoroughly enjoyed tho sports, which were of a high standard. During the day no fewer than 14 records were broken -and'two were equalled. Eleven schools were represented. Tho eenior shield was retained by Southland with 18 points. Otago was next with 10$ points, followed by Waitaki with ISJ points. Otago won the junior shield xiitn 13 points, with Waitaki second with 7 points. The gold medal awardc-d to the senior gaining most points went to A. E.
