YACHTING.
TWO IMPORTANT RACES. NAVY LEAGUE CUP AND STACEY, TROPHY. The. Canterbury Sailing and Power-Boat Club held two races at Lyttelton on.Saturday afternoon—the .annual contest for the Beryl Stacey trophy, presented by Mr A, i\ Stacey, and the race between representatives from Christchurch and Lyttelton for the Navy League Cup. Conditions'were 'fairly good, and twelve of tho best yachts in the harbour ' ' entered for the first event. The entry for the open class race was /a record, and there was a large crowd of spectators'. The course was from the,,eastern: end :of the Gladstone. In the second round, on the run down, Maraugi challenged Colleen, which had about 300 yards' lead, but could not overhaul ier. Colleen kept her lead, and beat, -the scratchvacht by three . minutes'. iColleen .finished the race at'sbr 6min 3sec;, Wa.t«r'. Beetle gained second place, and Hakari third. To Brassell great credit' was'due for,'his handling of the boat.
Navy League Cup. The Navy League Cup course was .the f ordinary .Takapuna class club .course. The defenders were W. Tissiman and A. Hendry, who sailed the Ma .Peru. The challengers were R. Beveridge and T. Bassett, in Gadfly. The start was even, and Tissiman, within twenty-five yards of the "starting-mark, lost his main sheet, and experienced considerable trouble with the spinnaker. Gadfly's spinnaker failed to fill,, but she obtained. a lead. On the beat up. to the starting point- Gadfly had a good lead. • Beveridge negotiated the reef, and went to vie- . tory, beatinj Ma" Peru by five minutes.
