CHEVIOT SHOW.
HEAVY ENTRIES. GOOD DRAUGHT HORSE DISPLAY. The amiuiil Sliow of tlio Cheviot; A. and P. Association was hold on Saturday, wlii-n tlie fine day was taken advantage; of by a large tiiimber of N'ortii Canterbury tieuple to attend the gathering. The district recently received a licavy downfall of rain, tind the couutvyside bore a refreshingly green appearance. Feed is more" plentiful than in any other part of the province. The Show was not held last year on account of the depression. The decision to hold it this year was well .justified by results, as there was an excellent response in the way of entries, and the attendance exceeded expectations. The feature of the Show was the domestic produce section, which, for number and quality would be hard to excel at, much bigger gatherings than Cheviot. The cookery, fruit, and dairy sections were particularly outstanding. In the stock sections, sheep made quite a good display, the breeds represented being Southdown, Corriedale. and halfbrcd. In Southclowns J. B. and Thos. Stevenson took the main awards, the championship ticket,, however, being won by J. Forsyth. ,A. E. Denton and Thos. Stevenson were the principal winners in the half bred classes, and G. R. Macdonald took the bulk of the awards in the more .keenly contested Corriedale classes. Considering the backward season the section for fat lambs and sheep was surprisingly good, there being some excellent types for export penned. Though not a strong section numerically draught horses represented quality. The ctass for mares drew nine entries, the female championship of the section going to a good type shown by Mr A.' Gillanders. The pairs of working draughts wore also good, seven entries being forw&rd. Hackneys and cribs good entries and keen competition, with the awards well divided. The . hackney championship'was awarded to Mr Jno. McAdam's Calm. The hunter classes provided a good exhibition t>f .lumping by some of the horses. Ponies were a particularly attractive section, and some of the juveniles showed a good deal more than the average competency in the saddle. Champion pony was shown by Mr A. Gillanders. The horse section, as a whole, drew 120 odd entries, a considerable increase on the number generally forward in this section at the smaller Shows. Cattle' were small in numbers. Dogs were a well-contested section. The vegetable display a good one, only an odd class or two failing to attract brisk competition. Roots drew up to 18 entries in one of the classes, and under the climatic conditions that have prevailed they made a really good display. The mangels were particularly good, as were the turnips. The following is the prize-list, the figures in parentheses indicating the number of entries in the classes: — SHEEP. (Judges: Corriedales, Mr J. R. Little; halfbreds. Mr It.
