SECONDARY SCHOOLS' TOURNEY.

TITLES DECIDED. Although the finals revealed no outstanding player, the standard in the Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association's intersecondary sclfbol tournament, which was advanced to the concluding rounds- at Wilding Park on Saturday morning, was satisfactorily high. Three of the six championship events were completed, while the finals of the others and the remaining handicap games will be played next Saturday morning. Christchurch Boys' High School, as usual, dominated the boys' title events, but it was pleasing to' note the success of St. Andrew's, St. Bede's, West Christchurch, and Technical College in the handicaps. With 15 different schools represented in tho tourney and nearly 300 competitors, it is apparent that lawn tennis has now assumed a leading place in the sports activities of the secondary schools in Christchurch. M. A. Kickard (Boys' High School), run-ner-up in the event last year, clearly earned his right to the boys' 'senior singles championship title. In the final. he met R. \\. Burns, also of Boys? High School, and won with the loss of only three games. Bickard and Burns had eliminated in the semi-finals C. O'Connor and E. Shsnd respectively, the lesding contenders from St. Bede's and St. Andrew's Colleges. With.no obvious weaknesses in his game, Kickard played with admirable steadiness and coolness, and took full advantage of Burns's uncertainty on the backhand. When he-strengthens this department of his game Burns will make a good player. He made some fine recoveries off Rickard's* favourite scoring stroke,. a fast backhand shot into his opponent's forehand corner. The final of the girls' singles was a very even contest between Miss A. Smith (Sumner District High School) and Miss H. Hervey (St. Margaret's. College). With a repertoire of very correctly produced stroke's Misa Smith played an oven, solid game, , Miss Hervey, using her height and reach to advantage, showed plenty of enterprise, following to the net on a very severe fore-'

hand drive. Both should develop into excellent players. I. J. Corich and R. Colwill (Boys' High School) played splendid tennis to win the doubles championship from E. Shand and P. Williamson (St. Andrew's College.).' The way in which ' they crowded the net at every opportunity showed that they' had a very fair grasp of the essentials of the doubles game. Williamson also volleyed well, joining in some fine exchanges with the High School pair. Shand's chief asset was. a hard-hit forehand drive. 1 Results of Saturday's games were as follows: I, BOYS' EVENTS. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES.
