MEMORIAL HALL COMMITTEE.
r J lie Memorial Hall Management Committee held the final meeting for the year 011 Thursday evening. Mr J. Sturrock presided. Others present were Messrs A. Syme (secretary), T. Wood, O. W. Moore, W. G. Chapman, and G. Radford. A motion oi' sympathy with Mr llickerby in his illness was carried. The r lown Clerk wrote stating that the I' inanec and By-laws Committee had decided to take no further action in regard to exempting the hall from rating. The committee had also decided that it could not see its Avay to recommend the City Council to agreo to the suggestion that the Council should take over complete control of the liall, and that the Waimairi County Council be relieved from sharing any portion, of the excess or deficiency revenue. : Mr Sturroclc said that the committee whs exactly in the same position as last year. There was not sufficient funds iu hand to meet the rates, and the matter would be left for both Councils to deal with. Mr W. G. Chapman said the "Waimairi Council would not pay. The position was different from the City wncre ! flic amount was spread over tlie whole ] area, whereas the Waimairi share would have to be borne by a small area in the Papanui riding. It was decided to notify the City Council of the position. The secretary was instructed to send a letter of thanks to Mr 11. Eaglcton for his services in connexion with the letting of the hall. Tennis. , r This afternoon the Papanui Tennis Club 's team meets Linwood in the filial for the C Grade shield. The team teached the same position last year, but were unsuccessful. At the Waimairi Club, good progress lias been made with the championship singles. Hesults of matches are as follows: —>A. Charlcsworth beat K. Mulholland, C-l, 6-2; P. Smith beat F. Longley, 0-0, 6-5; C. Rich beat A. Charlesworth,. 0-2, 6-2. In the women's event Miss N. Thomas beat Miss Drury, C-l; Miss R. Hookham beat Miss E. Musson. 0-0; Miss G. Dalle y beat Mrs Longley, 0-0; Miss Guild beat Miss D. Irving, 6-f>. In the mixed liandicap doubles W. Mann and Miss Roberts (scr) beat C. Seabrook and Miss Guild (rec. 3-6), 0-3; J. Pullon and Mrs Clark (rec. 15) beat F. Longley and Miss Mulholland (rec. 15), 6-5; Stockdale and Mrs Longley, (rec. 15 3-C) beat W. Clarke and Miss Johnstone (rec. 15 3-6); G. Rich and Miss Norrie (scr) beat A. Charlesworth and Miss I. Hill (rec. 15), 0-5; F. Smith mid Miss G. Irving .(owe. 30) beat H. Tillman and Miss F. Hill (owe 40), «-'■ i Dance. ! A dance, in aid of the shilling stall { at tho Waimairi School l'ete, was held in the Gaiety Hall on Saturday evening. Mrs S. Smith was the organiser und Mr 11. Savage was M.C. Old and new dances were enjoyed, music being supplied by Mr Oswald Savage, assisted : by Mrs J. Sturrock and Miss o'. Martin. During tho evening mouth-organ solos were given by Master Trevor Barndin. • A Monte Carlo one-step was won by Mrs Neilson and Mr McCausland, and a luckv-spot waltz by Mrs It. Small and Mr C. Wilson. Competitions were won by Mrs Small' and Miss Savage, Temperance Union. The monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the W.C.T.U. was held on Thursday afternoon"- in St. Giles Sunday Schoolroom, Mrs Graham presiding ovef• a good • attendance. A letter was received inviting the members to an afternoon talk with Mrs Higgins of the Salvation Army. A number of parcels of clothing wcro handed in to forward to the Central Belief Depot. The sum of 19a was added to tlio Union's funds as a result of a "bring and buy" sale. Sunday School Picnic. The annual picnic of St. Giles Sunday School was held at the Kaiapoi Domain. There was an attendance of 150 children and about 100 adults. Though the weather was wet in Christchurcli, at Kaiapoi the day was fine and a pleasant day was spent. Eaces, games, and various sports kept the children busy during the day. A treasure hunt caused considerable excitement. Mr E. Eickcrby is progressing favourably, and will probably be leaving hospital to-day. Mrs IT. Stanton, who has been staying with her sister-in-law, Mrs H. Tillman, St. James avenue, has returned to. her home in Orari.
