RIVER PROTECTION. WAIMAKARIRI . TRUST'S ESTIMATES. The Waimakariri River Trust rates for the year ending March 31st, 1933, it was announced at yesterday's meeting of that body, will not be altered. They are as follows, according to classification:—A, MOd; B, 1-lld; C, l-12d. The Eyre-Cust loan - are as follows: A, 341-1000 d; B, 292-1000 d; C, 256-1000 d. The estimated income from rates, rents, sundry sales, and subsidies, was set down at £24,442. - Estimates, amounting to the same figure, were passed as follows: £ Standing charges on Loan .. 7,200 Election (say) .. .. 900 Payment to Waimairi County Council, regarding North road LOO Secretary's Office 750 Interest on overdraft .. 500 Cost of rates .collection .. 000 Land purchases .. .. 1,300 Available for construction purposes (as set out) .. 13,092 Estimated cost of approved Belief/Scheme, comprising:rrPlanting, etc., at mouth of river; clearing below railway.-, bridge; embankments below railway , bridge; clearing island at railway bridge; planting pinus, willows, and. poplars;" cutting firewood; clearing bed of river; south-, era embankment; clearing Cam, Cust and Eyre; clearing South Branch; clearing old North Branch; clearing reserves; drainage. Supervision, insurance, cooks, tools purchases and depreciation, materials and overhead ... 6,000 "Work below railway bridge .. 2,650 Floodgates and culverts .;. 300 Embankment top end, Coutts Island (Dragline) .. 700 Insurance, permanent handß ~ GO General maintenance .. 590 Flood patrols .. .. 50 Gauge station at Gorge .. , 230 Flood repairs .. 700 Groynes at head of' Coutts Island .. 500 Betaking cross sections ' . 200 Engineering and supervision .-. 1,200 Total v ... . £24,442 It was' stated that the total'estimated expenditure, including payments of wages to unemployed relief • workers would be approximately £60,000. lu. reply to a question-the chairman (Mr J. Wood) said that' the proposed expenditure on the work would make Belfast and Christchurcli secure frqftr floods. He agreed that the Trust was really accelerating its work by about six years. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Mr iA. Manhire) stated that of the estimated cost of £9OO to conduct an election, £6OO was in .respect of preparing,.tho rolls. If the Trust could be sure that there would be no election there would be no need ,to prepare rolls.
