THE PRESBYTERY.
„ A PROPOSED CONFERENCE. The Christchurch Presbytery met yesterday, when, apart from matters conducted in private, the chief business was the election of the Bev. J. A. Allan as Moderator. A request that the Presbytery should send two representatives to a conference, representative of both religious and secular bodies, to be called in Apri) •for the purpose of "ascertaining thd best means to be employed in overcoming the 1 imposition of intolerable conditions that are menacing the whole fabric of society" in the prevailing economic depression, was received from the Canterbury Industrial Association of /Workers. The letter set out that there was naturally a diversity of opinion as to the causes, but that there must be unanimity in the desire .for remedial measures. The Bev. L. M. Sogers, in. moving that two representatives be appointed, said that he was not snre of the proposed order of reference, but he felt that such a request was not one that could be passed by cavalierly. "The Presbytery does not commit itself to anything. by sending delegate* to a conference," said the Bev. J. Lawson Robinson. "We should be sympathetic with any attempt to work toward a solution of the present difficulties, and these men, are obviously jost as aerious about the matter as we are. I think we sliould be putting ourselves in an invidious position if we refuse to be represented:" The Rev. T. Paterson and the Rev. L. M. Rogers were appointed to represent the Presbyter^.
