TAR-SEALING IN THE CITY.

TO THE EDITOR 0? THS PRESS Sir, —Referring to mv letter of the 3rd instant, I appreciate the fact that vou referred the contents thereof to the City Engineer Mr Galbraith, who makes the excuse that any neglect ot protecting our tar-sealed roads by topdressing at the proper time is aue to his inability to obtain tar in sufficient quantities. I think this matter should be gone into still further, as there are other gas works in the South Islantl that T understand would be pleased to get rid of their surplus tar at competitive prices. The point that I make is that really good roads, which have been well put down in the past, and have been maintained for years, are now allowed to. go back to an alarming extent before receiving attention. This is of vital importance to heavily taxed ratepayers. —Yours etc., RATEPAYER. I\3. —There is - at present patching work going on in Salisbury street, cast, which I am sure even Mr Galbraith will agree is almost a Waste of money. If this patching were tollowed by tai-sealing, the ratepayers

would get something for their money, j but it is followed by more patching J and waste. S March Bth, 193*2 J
