TRAINS AND BUSES.
10 TUB EDITOR OF TOI PRESS Sir, —Your representative's report of the interview with a bus proprietor respecting the refusal of the Licensing Authority to grant a • permit for the runnings of the bus to the Motukarara races on Saturday is rather amusing. To one who knows the racing fraternity it does not seem at all credible that those who are interested in the races would forgo their sport simply because the buses were not running. Also the small number of employees who would be affected by the cancellation of the passenger buses is negligible compared to the extra costs to the country by duplicate services, which I presume was taken into account by the Transport Board before this decision was made. I am quite sure I am only one of thousands who think that the Board did its obvious duty in refusing the permit. . All the taxes the buses pay do not repair a one-hundredth part of the damage done to the roads, and. the farmer and general taxpayer have to pay the balance in rates. Also the roads are losing in condition all the time. If a bus is licensed to run, the owner should liavo to pay tne same as in other countries, that is one pennv or twopence per mile seating capacity ot the bus. —Yours, etc., RATEPAYING FARMER. Springston. March 7th, 19-32.
