HISTORIC BUILDING TO BE PRESERVED.
GODLEY'S HOUSE AT LYTTELTON. v A proposal that the historic official residence of John Robert Godley, next to the Fire Station on the Sumner road, Lyttelton, should be demolished, owing to the cost of upkeep, was defeated at last night's meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council. The building, which was Godley's residence during his term in Canterbury, is now owned by the Council. Cr. G. Halliday drew tho Council's attention to the state of the building, and moved that tenders be called for painting the exterior. " - Cr. A. McDonald asked if. the building was worth painting. The house brought in a very small rental, and it would probably pay the Council to- pull it down rather than spend money on repairing it. The site was a valuable °"cr. A. T. E. Miller supported McDonald. Cr. D. E. L. Collett said the building was an historic one and should, be preserved irrespective of the a.inount of rental received. The Mayor, Mr F. E. Sutton, said he would strongly protest against any suggestion that the building should be demolished. There were few historic buildings in Lyttelton, and the house of John Robert Godley should.be preserved whatever happened. ; ■ Cr. Halliday's motion, that tenders bo called, was carried.
