ATHLETICS.
CANTERBURY TITLES. GOOD PERFORMANCES. In spite of rain throughout the earlypart of the day and extending into the afternoon, •which had made the track at Lancaster Park holding some fast times were recorded during the running of the Canterbury Athletic Championships no Saturday afternoon. In many events New Zealand standard performance was bettered and in more than one instance the result was close enough to the New Zealand record to give the crowd a thrill. In point of performance this meeting, must be considered the finest ever seen in Canterbury in deciding the championship titles. In spite of the unpleasantness of the afternoon there was a crowd of some hundreds present and it indicated that given fine weather the championships would have attracted a record attendance. Broadway's Brilliance. The outstanding performance of the meeting was that of T. G. Broadway, who won the half-mile in lmin 56 4-5 sec, after leading from end to end, and the ■ 440 yards in 50 4-ssec, with a thrilling and well-judged finish which just took him home a foot to the good. Broadway's time in- the half-mile is the second best ever run by a New Zealander. Don Evans, of Taihape, the present New Zealand champion, holds the best performance of lmin 54 4-ssec. When it is remembered that Broadway made his own pace from start to finish to put up his performance on a track which was very holding and dead, something of its quality may be imagined. Broadway is a greatly improved runner and is in great "fettle at present. He should trouble Evans at the forthcoming New Zealand Championship meeting. The New Zealand standard for tho half-mile is two minutes. Broadway's effort in the quarter-mile was almost of equal merit for he displayed great judgment to win on the tape with a burst of speed in the straight, which was a revelation. The New Zealand standard time is 51 seconds, and the best New Zealander's performance 50 seconds, so that Broadway's time of 50 4-ssec is remarkable under the track conditions. Blackmore's Consistency. In referring to the 440 yards championship the runner-up, M. A. Blackmore, deserves special mention. He looked a winner 15 yards from the tape, but failed to hold off Broadway's sensational finish and was beaten by a foot. This is the fourth time in succession that Blackmore has been beaten for the quarter-mile title, and it has been by a different runner on each occasion. He 18 one of the most consistent ' quarter-milers that Canterbury has produced, and in view of Broadway's brilliance that fact is perhaps allowed to be overlooked by officials and spectators alike. Probably Blackmore wlil not figure at the New Zealand championships, as it is understood that the Canterbury team will .be a very limited one'as far as the Association's selection fa concerned, but it is a great pity, as it would. not at. all surprise to see' him the 440 yard^ 1 title. , ' ;,D. F, Anderson did not run at, all well in the .final of-the 446, yards, and neither'did the ttile-holder, O. C. Harley. ' , ■ • G.T. Bart, the present holder of the New Zealand 100 yard's title, scored in the 100 yards and the 220 yards. In each case ; he met strong opposition and the: crowd were treated to exceedingly thrilling finishes in each case. E. G. Young was unfortunate in the final of the 120 yards hurdles when he fell' when almost a yard in front at the final hurdle. Young , was second in the last New Zealand championships in the similar event, F. C. Barwell, who had fought every inch of tie journey, was then left in front and made no mistake about annexing the title. Bplctndld Mile. The mile championship was a splendid race, with the largest field of the meeting in the contest. The winner was A. Kane, from Waimate, who, although small of. stature, displayed a pleasing ease of action which allowed him to make the pace just too hot for his opponents in the final stages of the race. His effort was-very well judged, and.it staved off a very strong challenge issued in the straight by W. L. Sargison/of Sydenham. The very promising young Matthews, who recorded 4min' 30 l-ssec at the inter-secondary school championships, was unable to start owing to a swollen ankle. However, Kane's time of 4min 29 4-ssec—-just outside the New Zealand standard —was a very fine one under the conditions. Batstone's Vaulting. One of the! most exciting events of the afternoon was the pole vault, in which W. j. Batstone,.the present champion, and holder of the New Zealand , record of lift 3sin, defended his title successfully with a vault of lift. He had won the event when he vaulted 10ft Sin, but continued, and had cleared lift fairly comfortably when he elected to discontinue. The, New Zealand record was certainly endangered. Batstone is a .past master at the art in spite of the fact that he. is now 36 years of age, and this will probably be his last season as a competitor in championship events. The runher-up was L. E. Smith, who is a pupil of Batstone's. Judging by the manner in which he Cleared 10ft, he is an apt one. J. G., Nelson recorded quite a good performance to win the long jump at 21ft 3in; Conditions for taking off were not good. J. M, Ollivier, making his second appearance in open competition, did excellently to win both the half-mile and the mile walk championships. Even more so than for many of the other, events, conditions were spoiled for the high jump, but the winner, W. S. Brettell, put up a splendid performance in leaping sft sin. Brettell is 18 years of age. Promising Junior. , A runner of more than ordinary promise was revealed in J. D. Carmichael, the winner of the 100 yards junior championship. Incidentally, Carmichael qualified to start in the final of the 220 yards open championship'by beating G. F„.Hart, the winner of the title, in the heats in 23 3-ssec. He elected not to start in the final. Carmichael, who is 17 years of age, won the 100 yards junior championship as he liked. In the heat he recorded 10 3-ssec, and he won the final in the same time. Teams' Championship. . The teams'' championship, held by 'Varsity, was left in doubt to the end, when the pole vault, the only event left, had to decide, the issue. Batstono (C.A.A.C.) made no mistake about ,clinching the issue for his club. 'Varsity had to acknowledge defeat. The following are the detailed results:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. 100 YARDS.
