A Century of Carpet Production Assembled in one of Ballantynes Colombo Street Windows is a Novel DISPLAY OF SPECIMEN CARPETS, showing the development in Carpet production, covering the period 1850 . 1932 Very early in the history of Carpet weaving a high standard of quality in weave and design was achieved by British manufacturers, and in this direction England still maintains her early-won prestige. The exhibits include fine examples from the old hand loom, as well as a fascinating range produced by the later power loom method. These include Brussels and Wiltons, some of which were made exclusively for Royalty. The perfection of colouring and design—throughout the ser i e s—is beyond criticism. As a fitting background to the display, there is a 1932 Axminster of an altogether unconventional design, indicating the modernistic trend in the carpet of to-day. New stocks of Carpets and Carpetings now on view in the Department. CI 83170
