EMPLOYMENT OF MAORIS.
WELLINGTON HARBOUR BOARD DIFFICULTY. (PKZSS ABBOCUTIOK TJSLBOR4U.) , WELLINGTON, February 26. _ The question of non-employment of Maoris as members of the permanent staff was raised at the meeting of the Harbour Board by Mr H. Bennett, who said that he understood the reason yras one of insurance. Personally, he could see- np reason for such differentiation • against the Maoris. The chairman, (Mr J. W. MacEwan) said that the Government Life Assur- - ance Department and the insurance companies would not accept risks on members 6f the Native race, and the board's regulations required that members . of the permanent staff must be insured. He agreed that it was not fair to differentiate against the Maoris, and if possible the. Board should find a remedy for the position. After further discussion/ the man Btated that a,report on the matter would be submitted at the next meeting.
