ASHBURTON. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Another arrest hasv/been made /by the-police in connexion:with the burglary on Sunday night of a store of liquor at the rear of the Arcade and the theft of liquor, valued at £lB 2s, i owned by Mr F. L. Coutts., - John Grice, aged 31 years, a threshing mill hand, appeared, before Mr F. W. Watt, J.P., yesterday charged with breaking and entering the premises -of Frank Leslie Coutts, and stealing a quantity of liquor valued at £lB 2s. Senior-Sergeant H. Martin opposed bail and accused was* remanded in custody till March sth. John- Hunt, a married man, of Ashburton, appeared on two charges of a breach of his prohibition order, and with being found drunk in a public place. He was remanded till to-day to appear before the Magistrate.' School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton East School Committee was held on Wednesday, MrW. S. Kerr presiding. A eomplaint was received from a parent that the children had been instructed by some toachers to obtain books etc., from certain tradespeople. The headmaster (Mr N. W. Pavitt) reported that he had enquired into the matter and assured .the committee that.no teachers had instructed the, children to go to <a certain firm, but had only mentioned the name of the firm where the article could be supplied. Correspondence was received from the Education Board advising the appointment of . probationary assistants and probationers. The ■ headmaster's report stated that the school reopened with 500, 253 boys and 247 girls. Average attendance Tras 480. The following had been; appointed to the staff at the beginning of 'the year: Misses Beck and Mathieson, and Mr Armstrong. \ _ ■ It was resolved to approach) the Education Board to have a partition erected in room V. Several minor I .repairs left in the liands of the Visiting Committee, Messrs F. Buxton S. G. Groves. . ' N ' • - Hakatero lodge. • At the meeting of the , Hakatere Lodge No. 68, 1.0.0. F., held; on Wednesday evening, the N.G. Bro. C. Garforth presided. One brother was reported on the sick funds of the lodge. Two candidates were initiated, into the 'order. The secretary reported that'at .the Past Grands' meeting at Wakanui, If.G. Bro. A. Moore was elected a» Deputy-: : District Grand Master for the ensuing year. : The syllabus for the _ coming > -quarter was approved and nominations ' *£dr officers for that period ,were >oceived, A transfer to Christchurch "was granted to one member. ' A total' of 137 Entries have been received for the Ruapuna Amateur Swimming- Cilub'» annual carnival, tomorrow. Swimmers from South Cantor: bury and Ashburton will •be competing. The 33 l-3yds inter-club handicap has attracted 36 and the 133 1-3 ■yds event for the Scarva Cup, given tfy Mr Norman Orr, has attracted ten teams comprising 40 swimmers for tho event. Golf Club. > .TM annual meeting of the Ashburton Golf Club-was held last evening, when j ■the president (Mr F. W. .Watt) presided over, a good attendance. . The balance-sheet showed that the year commenced with a debit balanefc of *:£lß4 18s Bdand closed with a debit balance of £123 10a 7d. Tho assets
exceeded the liabilities by £843 19s Bd, | as against £641 Os 8d shown on last year's balance-sheet. There was an improvement of £202 19s on the. year's working. x The annual report stated that tho club-house had' been * enlarged without the ordinary funds being drawn on. The usual' inter-club matches were played, with Methven, Rakaia, Timaru, Christchurch, Richmond Hill, Harewood, and' Hororata. The Ashburton-Hare-wdoft Cup was won by Ashburton at Harewood, :but *was : afterwards lost. to Harewood on the Ashburton links. The 'Mid-Canterbury championship meeting was -&, success. The senior championi ship wai .t won *- by J. J. Fitzgerald (Harewood) and the junior by G. C. Bonnington (Ashburton), The club ..championships resulted . as •, follows:Msn's, J. T.' Smith (senior), W. Thomas ,(jqnior); ladies', Mrs 1 F. M. Brodie (senior), Mrs H. A. Vezey (junior). The services of the professional coach (Mr L. Reilly) were fairly well utilised during both his visits. Thanks was due to all who had assisted the club, special mention being made of Mr J. E. Carter (secretary) and the greenkoeper (Mr D. Morton) for the manner in which, he had kept the links. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: — Patron, Mr D. Wood; president, Mr F. W. Lawson said that with the prevailing financial" conditions they should, consider reducing the subscriptions.' .The-chairlnan stated that until the bank .overdraft was reduced the subscriptions should-not be lowered. ** Mr V. W. Russell said that it was impossible to reduce subscriptions under the present conditions, as there was no" margin<■ in the financial working. Mr H. G. Kemp said that the committee* had no big schemes for improvement'to the links in view this year. _ Mrs E. F. Nicoll was - elected a life member in'view of .the active intereat she has .taken in the club during the past' 25 years.
Baptist . Minister Welcomed. At the Baptist Cliurch last evening an enthusiastic welcome was accord-edthe-Eev.:E. "W. Batts, of Auckland; who, with Mrs Batts, arrived in 4-shbur-ton yesterday to take over the Baptist pastorate. -There was a large attendance/ including the Revs. W. All were confident thrift there was a bright future for the new paßtor and his wife. The Rev. W. Lambert also extended, a to Mr' Batts, referring to the congregation's loyalty to the Union and denomination in calling a student to the Baptist College. The Eev. A. G. Irvine spoke on behalf of local ministers, the Eev. Jones on: .behalf of the Cantcrtiury Auxiliary, and Mr R. 11. Lay on behalf of the Church. Mr Batts suitably replied, thanking them for their welcome. During the evening a number of musical items were given. • Swimming Sports. The annual swimming Bports of the girls of the Ashburton High School were held in the school ,baths yesterday - afternoon, when there was a fair attendance of parentß and old pupilß. AH the events were well contested, most enthusiasm being displayed over the hoijse and form relay and the old girls v. »chool rape. The; races wero run off in quick succession under the control of the staff.
The heats wero run off early during the week, leaving the finals for yesterday. STAVELEY. * .-.vwi The efforts made by thp local districts on behalf of the earthquake relieffunda ■were brought to a very successful conclusion oil Tuesday evening, when, a dance was held in the hall, which was packed. Music was supplied by Mrs ,Burt and Messrs 1". Green, G. -WVEandall, and E. "Wolfrcy, and from an electric gramophone lent by Mr T. B. Adams. Mr A. Bentjey was M.C. Supper was supplied by the ladieß of the district. A cake was won by Mr lan Anderson (Mayflcld).
Everything for the dance was given free of charge, and this was gratefully acknowledged by the chairman of the committee, Mr A. W. Russell, who also announced the.results of the appeal as follows: Houso-to-house canvass, £2O 7s 6d; dance, £l3 13s 6d; school children's donations, £1 0s 6d; total, £35 Is 6d. This amount has been sent to the Ashburton fund.
RAKAIA* The second of a series of swimming sports under the auspices of- the Uakaia Swimming, Club was held at the Domain swimming bath on Wednesday evening. The weather was cold and there was sot a large attendance. The sport was.very interesting and some close finishes'firere witnessed, which reflected credit on the handicappers. Although Saturday is the last day-for payment of xatos tho imposition of tlje io per cent, penalty there is -still £1623 17s 9d outstanding rates due to the Mt. Hutt Roatl Board. Usually there is a last-minUte rush to pay, but this year the -amount unpaid is very much larger than- usual. For the convenienco of ratepayers and latecomers it has been decided to keep,the office • open all day on Saturday.
