SECRETARY TO RETIRE. -' S ■ (FESaa ASSOCIATION TJILKOEAM.) "WELLINGTON, Deoember 10. Mr G v L. Stewart, secretary of the Wellington Education Board, tendered his resignation to the Board this morning. The resignation was accepted with great regret, many eulogistip remarks being passed on Mr Stewart's services to .the Board. The meeting decided to place on reoord the Board's very high appreciation of Mr Stewart's services'to theBoard and education generally throughout the Dominion, and in regretfully accepting his resignation to grant him three months' leave of absence, which Mr Forsyth (chairman) said would hardly equal the periods which Mr Stewart spent in looking after Board matters, instead of taking leave which was due to him. Mr Stewart will have occupied tfye fasition of secretaiy for 27 years when is resignation takes effect in April next. He was born in Forfarshire, Scotland, and received his education in Dunedin at the Albany street' School, of which he was dux, and at Otago University. It was "while Jar Stewart was secretary of the Otago Farmers' Union that the first steps were taken to establish the farmers' insurance scheme, which , after wards proved of great benefit to farmers. Mr F. S. Hylton. at present assistant, secretary to the Boara, was later in th« meeting appointed unanimously as suiMjessor to Mr Stewart. Mr Hylton has the longest service in New Zealand of anyone in a similar position, Msrecord being 33J years, of have been with the Wellington Board* and 9} years as secretary of the Marlborough Board.
