SWIMMING.

OPENING CARNIVAL OP SEASON. SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES. For the opening carnival of the season the Canterbury Centra of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association provided a splendid programme of events at the Tepid Baths last evening. Including, as it did, four minor championship events, a first-class inter-club relay,' and a senior water polo match, the carnival deserved better support from the public than it Veceived, but those who attended saw some excellent performances recorded, while the more spectacular events, the senior and intermediate dives, produced some very interesting performances. Of the title events, the girls' Intermediate 100 yds championship produced a most promising girl in Miss Shona Campbell. Only IS years of age, she registered also the very fast time, in the final of the 33 I-Byds handicap, of 18 i-ssec. 0. Cliff was not pressed to win the 100 yds Intermediate boys' title and the time would have been better had he been paced for any part of the journey. J. McDonald had a walk-over in the intermediate dive, but was beaten in a good raco by N, Breward for the breaststroke title over the hundred yards. The water polo match was a fair exhibition, there being plenty of fast play. The teams comprised: G. Lawrie, D. H. Symeß, M. Rattray, L. Clarkson, A. T. P. Stokes, A. Dalton, and A. T. Bolam (A team); A. Taylor, H. Smith, G. Berry, 3. Simpson, L. 0. Fitch, H. Meilcle, and L. Moorhouse (B team), while for the benefit of the ■electors the emergencies, H. Dawson, G. D. Griffiths, C. R. Riordan, and V. G. Spiller, were also played during the match. An interesting section of the programme was that comprising the first half of the events for the Yaldhurst shield, competed for by primary schools. The rules of the competition provide that each school may be represented by not more than two members in each event, the dives and relay excepted. Four events were decided Inst evening, and four schools are running almost level for points to date. The remaining eventß of tho competition will be decided next Wednesday. Results were as follows: Championship Events. 100 YDS INTERMEDIATE GIRLS' CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP. (Kecord, lmin 15 l-ssec, Miss A. Mather, 1923.) Miss S. Campbell (East Christcburch) .. 1 MiBS V.
