♦ EPIDEMIC OF WHOOPING COUGH. (PBE3S ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, December 10. The Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross returned to -Auckland to-day after a three months croise to the Solomon and New Hebrides 1+ About 500 children are believed to have died as a result of a serious emdemic of whooping cough m the Sdotnon Group, which broke out before the arrival of the Southern Cross and which was abating when the vessel left th Thlre U hks been an exceptionally dry spring in ihe Solomon and New Hebrides groups where the rainfall is normally very heavy. The dry spell hnd not broken when the Southern rvnss left Vila, and it was feared there would be a shortage of food for the natives.
