PERSONAL. (3i>£OJAL TO THE MESS.') GREYMOUTH, December S. The Rev. W. A. Beaumont has been appointed viear of Cobden, his first parish in tho Dominion. Previously lie was stationed at Croydon, England. The Greymouth Municipal Band presented Miss Bertha Adkins with a xylonite set as a mark of appreciation of her services as accompanist. At St. John's Sunday School yesterday afternoon, in the presence of the scholars and a number of the congregation, an enlarged photograph was unveiled in memory of Mr Thomas Brown, who was for 50 years connected with St. John's Sunday School. Week-End Accidents. Two accidents occurred in the district during the week-end. While playing cricket at Camerons yesterday afternoon, 11. Allen, schoolmaster at Paroa, was struck behind the ear with the ball and his skull was fractured. He was admitted to the hospital. His condition is serious. A competitor in the road raco from Taylorville to Dunollie, on Saturday afternoon, W. D. Clark, of Cobden, came to grief when ho crashed into the Brunner bridge. Ho was treated for a cut over an eye at the Grey Hospital. Court. A sitting of the Greymouth Magistrate 's Court was held to-day. Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presided. Eor driving a motor-vehicle without being tho holder of a license, James Hill was fined 10s with 10s costs. A plea of guilty to a charge of using obscene language at Taylorvillo on November Bth was entered by David Drennan. He was fined A2, with 10s costs. Richard Hodgson, charged with unlawfrlly converting to his own use, but not so as to be guilty of theft within the meaning of tho Crimes Act, a motor-lorry valued at £4O, tho property of James Stewart, did not appear. He was also charged with drunkenaess. The evidence showed that defendant had taken tho lorry when he was in a drunken state. He was fined £l, and ordered to pay £2 10s to cover the damage to the lorry, and 10s expenses. George Arthur Brittcliff and Albert James Nesbitt were charged with being drunk and behaving in a disorderly manner while travelling from Greymouth to Christchurch on yesterday's excursion train. They were further charged with tho theft of four dessert plates, valued at Ss, and a china ornament valued at Ms, tho property of the Albion Hotel, Greymouth. A charge of wilfully damaging a railway carriage window was also preferred against Nesbitt. They pleaded not guilty. Senior-Sergeant Roach Btated that when arrested for drunkenness at Otira yesterday the dessert plates and piece of china were found in possession of the accused. Both accused wero "baching" at New Brighton, and had gone to Greymouth by the pxcurison train yesterday. They admitted having brought liquor with thorn. The Magistrate fined each accused £1; in default seven days' imprisonment, on the charge of being drunk and disorderly. On the charge of theft they were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months. An order for the return of the property to tho owners was made. Nesbitt was remanded to appear at Christchurch next Monday on tho charge of breaking a railway carriage window. Cricket. The remaining results of tho competition matches played last week-end under the West Coast Cricket Association were as follows: — Cobden defeated Brunner by ten wickets. The former made 154 in the first innings (K. Dcwar run out 61, Wilson 45), and 26 for no wickets in tho second. Brunner replied with 60 in their first innings (Thomas 18, McDonald 10, Kitto 10), and 110 in their second (Kennedy 30, Hogarth 27, O'Connell 23). Stnr boat Wntersiders by an innings nnd 52 runs, at Omoto. fttar made 91 in their first inuings (Moslcy 27, Smith 14). Watersiders scored 20 in their first innings (Harrington 10), and 19 in their second (Brown 9). At Dunollie, Runanga scored a narrow victory over Cobden A, winning by 10 runs. Cobden made 131 and Bunanga 141. United A beat Ivumara, at Kumara, by nine wickets. United scored 38 in their first innings (Restieaux 16), and in their second, 58 for one wicket (Casey not out 39). Kumara's first strike yielded 35 (Tanner 13), and their second 37 (Cooper 14). At Camerons, the home team defeated Ivamaka. In their first innings, Camerons scored 49 (Griffiths 17), and in their second 73 (Nissen 20, Thomas 15). Kamaka mado 46 in their first innings (Schofield 14), and 55 in their second (O'Connor 24). Fire at Maruia. A well-known landmark in the Maruia district, Walker's old homestead, at Station creek, was destroyed by fire on Saturday. Mr and Mrs J. Cassidy were the occupants, but were absent at the time. Rifle Shooting. The third competition for John Burns and Co.'s trophy was concluded on Saturday. Rifleman N. W. Wilkie made top score, with 97. The following are leading for the trophy:— Riflemen G. Anderson 186, T. Garth and L. Morressey 184, M. Garth 183, P. Blanchfield and N. W. Wilkie 182. Rifleman T. Garth has two more shoots; the others have only one more shoot. Obituary. The death occurred on Saturday, at Dillmanstown, of Mr James O'Brien, one of the earliest pioneers of the Grey district, who came at the outset of the mining industry and spent half a century in the Noon Gully district. He was a native of Ireland, 84 years of age. He was unmarried, and is survived by one sister, Mrs J. Murphy, of Dillinanstown. Technical School. The Greymouth Technical School Board met this evening. Present: Messrs T. E. Coates (chairman), J. B. Kent, F. L. Turley, W. H. Parfitt, A. J. Fairmaid, W. Kyle, Dr. W. J. Mcl Brearty, and Mrs Shuttleworth. It was decided to protest to the Education Department regarding requirements at the Technical School, which had been applied for and held up. It was decided to take over Standard IV. from the Grey Main School on the first of the month, following the completion of the additions to the Technical School. It-was resolved to hold the breakingup ceremony on Friday next. Road Race. A cycle road race took place on Saturday at Ross, over a distance of 5i miles. There were five starters. The "results were as follows: J. Smith (50sec) ... ;i C. Wilson (ssec) . . . . 2 E. Mitchell (scr) , . 3 Cobden Town Board. The Cobden Town Board met this evening. Present: Commissioners T. H. Jones (chairman), D. Cochrane, J. Keeney, M. F. Washer, and U. Mettrick. A letter was received from the Local Governments Loans Board regarding
the Cobden water supply. It W as referred to the Greymouth borough engineer. The Inspector of Health (Mr M ft Bettel) was present. He asked* that when specifications were received for buildings in Cobden, with a request for a building permit, all the specifications regarding drainage and plumbing bo referred to him for approval, so that any trouble regarding nanitarv conditions would be avoided.
