RAILWAY LUGGAGE CHARGES.
DUNEDIN MAN'S COMPLAINT. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) DUNEDIN, December 3. A Duncdin citizen who returned a few weeks ago after a European tour says that his most annoying experience arose after he returned to New Zealand. There were three in the party, and on arriving at Auckland their baggage weighed ojewt. They wanted it carried from Auckland to Duncdin, and this was done by the Railway Department at a charge which works out as equal to £43 16s ,xl per ton. The Dune-din man has kept a record of tho particulars as to trains and checks, tor reference if the Department asks for particulars. On his travelling tickets ho was allowed 3cwt, leaving 2jcwt to be paid for as'excess baggage. The packages, as reweighed at Dunedin, totalled" 2ewt 171b. The es.eesi charge on this-came to £5.12s
Gd, plus tho checking charge of Bs, he having to pay £6 Os 6d. With exactly the same baggage tho party travelled from Liverpool to Quebec and across Canada to Vancouver, and right on board the steamer without a penny of charge. "It seems to me," he added, "that tho charge itself is unreasonably high and that if it were imposed oil a stranger it would give him the feeling *that he was in an unfriendly country. Right through the Continent the people are trying to save visitors trouble and make them welcome, and I felt a little humiliated with the thought that the tourists whem we are supposed to he inv;ting should have such a slap in the face at the moment of landing."
