COUNTY COUNCILS.
EI.LKSMEKE. Tho monthly mooting of tho Ellcs:niCTe County Council was held at J-<cc.ston on Monday, when there wo re present Crs John lleslop (chairman), A. Quigley, K. T. Z' , Millan, John Nixon, and J, I'. McEvcdy. Tho Oxford County Council support for a resolution urging tho North Canterbury Hospital Board to curtail «wj>endjtitxo in view of tin) economic depression. Cr. McMillan said that all public bodies wore doing tho most at the present timo to avoid any expenditure that could bo deferred. Further correspondence was received in regard to a drainage trouble on tho boundary between tho county and tho Lceston town district, which concerned Messrs J, B. Marshall and T. Berk. It was decided to leave tho matter to the L.eeston Town Board to deal with. Tho District i-'ugiticer of Kaihvuys asked the Council to cut down some trees and top others in a public rond near Dunsandel. Some of tho trees at tho crossing wero obscuring a clear view of the railway, and thero was n danger of others falling over the lines. A letter was received from Mr D. Jones in which lie offered il's for the trees. He wished to retain them for shelter, but was willing to cut down homo at the crossing and to top others by arrangement with tho Kailway Department. It was decided to make an inspection of the trees and to invito Mr Jones to meet lac Councillors at the crossing. Advico was received from the and Survey Department that tho question of. repealing certain sections of Acts was being considered, and it requested thn Council's comments upon land vested in tho county. Tho Council decided to reply that it wished to retain the l.ind referred to, which was alongside the Knkaia Huts rond. Tho Kltham Borough Council submitted for consideration a scheme for tho relief of tinomplovnient by development of unusoi lands. 'Die Council was not favourable to the scheme, mainly on account of the poor quality of the land proposed to be used. "Tho Christchurch City Council wrote with reference to tho erection of a new building and purchase of ambulances for tho St. John Ambulance Association. Mr T. W. Brooks drew the Council's attention to the spread of California!! thistle, particularly to patches in the Selwyn riverbed. It was decided to refer the letter to the Agricultural Department. An application from Mr J. Boag to have portion of a road drain on his frontage cleaned and deepened was referred to the engineer for a report. Messrs Ludemann brothers (Southbridge) wroto that they had complied with ft request to clean an obstruction from a drain, and asked that steps should bo taken to remove other blockages. Tho Southbridge riding members and tho engineer wero asked to inspect and report. The waterworks caretaker, in his report, stated that an even supply of >\:ater 1o the races fed by tho Rakaia headworks had been maintained, but tho supply from the Selwyn lieadworks was still not good, 110 had mad© an inspection and had found that a good proportion of tho races had been cleaned, and that others were now receiving attention. A complaint from Mr \V. C. Brears, of Southbridge, that his paddock bad been flooded for three months, was referred to the caretaker for attention. In regard to an application from Mr O. 11. lies, of Killinchy, for a supply of water, tho clerk was instructed to reply that thero was not sufficient Mater available to serve a new raco in the summer, and that it. was desirable that any new lengths should bo cut in the winter months.
