ASHBURTON. ALLENTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At (lie monthly meeting of the All e „ ton School Committee tho chairman (Mr It. Houston) presided. Mr K S. Chambers (headmaster* reported that tho roll number at the beginning of tho month was 247 ( the average attendance was 236. ' T he girls had won tho (schools' A jjrarl! rounder competition. The csamina. Hons had been completed up to Standard A., and a number of Standard VI children had been granted proficiency certificates. Iho remainder would bo examined by the inspector on Friday 'I 1.0 staff was preparing f or the annual concert. It was decided to hold the break-un on December 18th, and to invito Mr T> Jones, M.P., to be present. Messrs 11. Silverwood and H. Rollinson were appointed a visiting committee.

Sunday School Concert. The young people's annual Sunday School concert in connexion with the Salvation Army was held in the Citadel last evening, before a large attendance. Tho guests of the evening were Lieu-tenant-Colonel Tooiner, New Zealand secretary of men's social work, and Mrs Toomer, and StafC-Captain Dry, manager of the Men's Institute at Addington. A comprehensive programme of songs, dialogues, recitations, and instrumental ami character items was presented with the assistance of several local artists. A parade of the LifeSaving Scouts and Guards -was also held.

Temperance Union. The annual meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held, when Mrs W. (Irigg presided. A voto of sympathy v.'as passed with Miss lilee, in her bereavement. A welcome was extended to Mrs McAskill, of tho Gore Union, who conveyed greetings from that branch. Greetings wero also received from Mrs Jjee-Cowie, who is now a resident of Honolulu. Mrs AV. H. Robinson was thanked for her interesting report of tho South Canterbury district executive meeting. The treasurer reported that eight new members had been enrolled during the year, making a total of 134 paid-up members. All the departmental reports revealed that satisfactory work had been carried out during tho year. The sitting Dominion officers were nominated for re-election. Tnc followihg officers were elected:— President, Mrs AV. Grigg; treasurer; Mrs G. Tulloch; assistant treasurer, Mrs McKlhinney; vice-presidents, Mesdames A. .T. I'ctrie, A. G. Irvine, G. D. Vercoe, H. McEwan, AV. J. Brown, AV. 11. Robinson, and Sister Mildred; hospital visitor, Mrs Church.

Motor-Cycling Club. A special meeting of the members of tho Mid-Canterbury Motor Club was held last evening, the president (Mr J. Harrow) presiding. Questions of interest to the club were considered in committee, and on resuming in open meeting, it was decided to adjourn until next week. It was decided to hold a paper-chase on Sunday, commencing from the Railway Viaduct at Tinwald. Messrs E. Coker and A. Mitchell were appointed to lay the trail.

Automobile Association. At a meeting of tho Ashburton Committee of tho Canterbury Automobile Association last evening, Mr N. L. "Wood presided. The present state of the Main South road, which is under construction between Ashburton and Chertsey, was tho subject of some very adverse criticism, and it was suggested that unless some improvement is effected, motorists should bo directed to mako a deviation at Chertsey, taking tho side-road leading through Newlands to Ashburton. It was resolved to refer complaints which had been received to the Council of tho C.A.A., asking that the matter be brought under the notice of tho Main Highways Board. It was decided to carry out improvements at the campin jj site at tho Ashburton traffic bridge. It was decided that signs for the Waterton, Longbcacli, and adjacent districts be erected immediately. It was agreed to recommend the Council of the Association to provide fire-places on the island between the two bridges at the Rakaia Gorge. It was decided to hold a picnic for Ashburton members at Peel Forest, towards tho end of January. Tho secretary reported that a number of new members had been enrolled.

Garden Party. As a wind-up to their year, tho members of St. Stephen's Ladies' Guild held a garden party in the spacious grounds of "Bleak House," Winter's road, which was kindly lent by Mr H. Stephenson, yesterday afternoon. There wore about 200 members and friends present. Games of golf, croquet, stroke croquet, and putting wero played, and a variety stall did good business. Afternoon tea was served, Mrs Stephenson acting as hostess. Amateur Athletics. A very successful evening meeting was staged on tho Domain Oval last night by the Ashburton Amateur Cycling and Athletic Club. There was a good attendance. The races were well contested. MT. SOMERS. November was a cold month at Mount Somers, and all growth is backward. Feed is plentiful, but lacks nourishment, as greater warmth is needed to harden it. In its present condition it is causing considerable scouring among stock. Tho iollowing meteorological observations. wero recorded at Mount Homers during November, those tor tho previous November being in parenRain fell on .16 days, totalling points (.357), with a maximum fall ot 106 points on the 2tith. The year's rainfall totals 86.74 in (38.90 in). Fourteen frosts were registered, with a maximum of 14 degrees oil the 23rd. Snow fell on the 23rd. At the monthly meeting of the Mt. Somers School Committee, there wero present—Mr G. Green (chairman), tho ■Kev. li. M. Cocks, Messrs W. McClimont, R. Young, and J. T. Bull. Tho appointment ot Messrs Young and McClimont, as members of the committee, was confirmed. It was decided to make the annual distribution of prizes at a children's concert and dance on Wednesday, December 17th, a prizo to be awarded each child in the school, with merit prizes in the standards, and special prizes for sewing, gardening, and attendance. The question of a picnic, or an excursion, was deferred to a later date. It was decided, to grant the. school a-holiday on Thursday on the occasion of the opening of the new railway line and mines.

lauriston. The monthly meeting of the Lauriston branch of the Farmers' Union was presided over by Mr H. J. Crothers, the attendance being so large that one of the principal speakers (-Mr west, of the Wheat Research Insti;[|7' m his opening remarks, said tftat this brancii of the Union was one of the most enthusiastic he 'had ° tar addressed. Mr West explained uny the work of the Institute, and ne service it offers to growers, mil®ls« a pd bakers. He discussed tho general harvesting methods, and gave advice as to the correct time to cut wheat in order that best milling and caking results may follow. At the conclusion of a most instructive adre +f,' Mr Crothers proposed a vote or thanks, which was carried by acclamation. Mr Beaven then showed

a splendid motion picture dealing with lnodern - farm machinery in operation m Australia and New Zealand. Mr Heaven explained the film as it was projected. He pave farmers a great deal of interesting and valuable information. Mr Franks, in proposing a vote of thanks to Mr Beaven, congratulated him on the splendid film .he had shown, and the explanations by which it had been accompanied.

RAKAIA. Tn the Rakaia Town Hall a very enjoyable social was held by the Rakaia Cricket Club. There was a good attendance. A Monte Carlo waltz was iron by Miss I. Smith and Mr 13. Doig. Music for the dance was supplied by Slattery's Band, and extras wero clayed by Misses Morrison and Culloty and Mr A. Pluck. Mr CDavison was M.C. Those who attend the Itakaia United Friendly Societies' picnic at on Saturday will have an opportunity of seeing and hearing an excellent alltalking programme of pictures in a modern theatre equipped with the Western Electric sound system. The matinee programme at the Harbour Light Theatre is headed by "The Night Bide," a powerful drama, and there is a good supporting programme. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Rakaia Lodge, M.U., l.O.O.I?., was netd_ in the lodge room, Sister Bishop presiding over an attendance of 80 members. Among those present were D.G.M Bro. Soal, D.D.G.M. Bro. Gunn 1.1 Bro. Guiverliouse, and D.S., Kro. Hardy. The officers of tuo Lioyal Ashburton Lodge conducted au initiation ceremony in" a very efficient manner. P.G. Brol Innes. of the Ashburton Lodge, gavo the White -Degree to five members.
