Charles Evans, aged 28, was shot in the abdomen by the captain of a Hawkesbury river vehicle punt during a brawl on the vessel. Evans is on the point of death. b He and five companions refused to pay fees on the punt, and after wordy warfare a fierce fight commenced, the men attacking a deck-hand, who was flung to the deck and kicked and punched. The captain, seeing his deckhand being unmercifully battered, fired two shots over the men's heads. As this had no effect a third shot was fired, and Evans fell. lie was rushed to hospital, bleeding profusely. The five men have been charged with assault.
