PRIZE ESSAYS.

annual competitions. NAVY LEAGUE AND VICTORIA LEAGUE. In the Navy League Hall last night the prizes won and the certificates awarded in the annual essay competitions conducted by the Navy League and the Victoria League were presented by Mrs E. G. Ilogg, president of the Victoria League. Mr J. J. Dougall, president of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League, presided, and there was a largo attendance. The chairman said that for several vears the Navy League and the Victoria League had conducted these competitions, and it seemed to him that the essays received each year were a little better than those received the previous vear.

Secondary Schools. He announced the results of the secondary schools' competition, and said that essays had been received from the Cathedral Grammar, Cliristchurch West District High, and Rangi-Ruru Schools, and from St. Andrew's, St. Margaret's, and St. Mary's Colleges (Cliristchurch), and from the Technical College (Greymouth"). In Class A (over 15 years) the subject. set was "Discuss the effect of the recent Naval Treaty upon the British Navy and the Empire," and the first prize (presented by the Navy League) was "won by W. P. Monk, St. Andrew's College, and the second (presented by the Victoria League) by L. B. Ballantyne, St. Andrew's College. In Class B (under 15 years of age), tlie subject was "The Advantages of Trade Within the Empire," and the first prize (presented by the "Victoria League) was won by Margaret Patricia Barron, St. Mary's College, Christchurch, and the second (presented by the Navy League) was won by Francis White, Technical College, Greymouth. St. Andrew's College will hold Mr J. J. Dougall's challenge cup until the next competition is decided. In Class A there were eleven competitors, and in Class B fourteen.

Primary Schools. The chairman said that the subject in the primary schools' competition was, "What wireless has done for the world," and 1820 essays were received from 38 schools —13 City and 25 country—and 157 certificates had been awarded. Necessity for the Navy. After the presentation of the prizes to the winners in the secondary schools' competition (with tho exception of the Greymouth prize-winner), and of the certificates to those in the City schools to whom they had been awarded, Mrs Hogg expressed her pleasure at the interest shown in both Leagues, and hoped that when her hearers grew up they would become members of one or the other. "When they read of what happened to countries conquered by ancient Home they must not think that similar happenings could not occur in these days. History had an uncanny way of repeating itself, and human nature was much the same now as then. If the British Navy was not a strong one what happened in olden days might happen to-day. The League of Nations was doing a great deal to help forward the settlement of disputes between, nations by peaceful means, and her hearers could do much to help the cause of peace by studying history and learning the lessons it taught. o Several naval and comedy motion pictures were then screened.
