PERSONAL. (SygCIAI, to THE I'RBSS.; GRE\MOUTH, November 26. Mr and Mrs E. Mayell, who have beon spending a holiday in Christchurch, returned yesterday. Miss M. Itigg will leave to-morrow oil a visit to Christchurch. Fathers Long, O'Meeghan, .Finnerty, and Lordan left by car this morning for Christchurch, to attend the funeral of the late Father T. A. Gilbert, S.M. Mr Dudley Wade, of Reefton, has been appointed to an assistant mastership at Dunedin Boys' High School. Mr and Mrs G. O. Black left Keefton for this morning. Grey Power Board. The concrete foundations for the Grey Power Board's power-house at Kaimata hydro-electric works have been completed. The progress of the work generally has been much hampered by the recent wet weather. Blackball Mine. A somewhat serious position has arisen at the Blackball mine, owing to the flooding of the dip extension soetion. The acid in the water has corroded the pump to such an extent that it would not keep the water level from rising. The dip extension is now under water, and no work ia possible there. Steps are being taken to install additional pumps.

River Protection. The protection works at the .Little "Wanganui river, at Harihari, are once again giving trouble. The first tier of piles at the northern end has been much scoured out. The depth of water iB about 22 feet, anil this leaves the first row of piles only five feet in the ground. Anxiety is being caused as to the possible action of the next flood. With a large quantity of snow on the hills, a few hours' warm rain may cause a big flood. Plunket Society. The Groymouth branch of the Plunket Society this afternoon entertained their president (Mrs F. M. Dennehy), who leaves on Saturday, en route to England, whore sho purposes spending the next two years. There was a largo attendance. Mrs P. J. McLean, actl "S' president, presided, and presented Mrs Dennehv with a bouquet of roses, and wished 'her bon voyage. Musical and elocutionary items were given, anu afternoon toa was dispensed. Sawmills Close. The closing down of tho Bell Hill and liuru sawmills has thrown 100 men out of work. The managers of these mills do not anticipate that any cutting will be done for three months. Some of the single men have already left Bell Hill to seek work. Football Ground. It is understood that negotiations by the West Coast Rugby Union for the purchase of an area suitable for playing grounds in tho Marsden road area of Greymouth will be completed within the next few days. Coastal Road. It is the intention of the Grey County Council to carry out further blasting operations at Batty's Hill, near tho Twelve Mile, on the coastal road. Workmen have been employed on that section since tho big pillar of rook was brought down, and a piece of overhang--ing rock will now be removed. Shots, will be fired just prior to finishing work to-morrow afternoon, and any fall which may obstruct tho road will not be removed until Saturday morning. Wbitebait. There havo been good runs oi' whitebait during tho last few days. This evening's train took ovor 40 tins of whitebait to Christchurch-

Reefton Higli School. The members of the Reefton District High School Committee waited ou Mr G. C. Black, M.P., laßt evening, when Mr "W. B. Auld (chairman) pressed the claim of the district in the matter of a new school. The present building, he said, was over half a century old. For some time it had been stated that Reefton had been first on the list for & new school, but several schools, which required smaller expenditure, had been ■erected. Mr Black, replying, stated that a now school would cost £OOOO, and it was a question of finance. He promised to make representations to the Minister for Education. County Bridges. Pour tenders were received by the Grey County Council for the road approaches to Camp Creek bridge. That of A..Gold (£132) was the lowest. The lowest tender has been submitted to the Public Works Department for approval. Railway Sleepers. Australian hardwood sleepers staeked at Kokiri and Kaimata have caused silver pine sleeper cutters, who are refused orders for sleepers, some concern, it being stated that the Government were importing hardwood sleepers- Enquiries have elicited the information that only 500 hardwood sleepers wore sent to the West Coast, to be used in the joints between rails. Workman Injured. Edmund McGrath, a workman employed on the.works being carried out at Harihari, had two fiingers of his right hand amputated to-day. No details are to hand. Missing Man. The search for the missing man, Ernest Mansfield Burr, was continued around Marsden to-day, but no developments have yet occurred to provide a solution of the mystery. Wet weather to-day made conditions unpleasant for the searchers. St. John's Church. the annual meeting of St. John's Presbyterian Church was held this evening, the Rev. H. R. Fell, Moderator, presiding over a good attendance. The managers reported a net revenue of £702 4s 6d. The estimated cost of repairing earthquake damj age to the Church, Manse, and Sunday School was £340 3s. Congregations throughout the Dominion, having given £246 12a 6d towards the required building fund, indebtedness had been reduced £2OO during the year, leaving a balanrce of £2OOO owing. The following were elected a Board of Managers: Messrs J. Bruerton. J. W. Caldwell, A. J. McDowall, V. Stevens,; H. Rowe, and A. H. Patterson. At the con elusion of the business of the meeting, supper, provided by the men of the congregation, was served by them. Wedding. After the ceremony the bride's mother entertained the guests.
