THE PICNIC SEASON.

MANY TRIPS ARRANGED. The weather at present may be wintry and cold, but summer ia approaching, and with it the picnic season. Already the Railway Department have made arrangements for special trains to accommodate different- parties during the next few weeks, and so far it seems that there will be no abatement in enthusiasm this year for the typo of outing that needs for success only a train, a large gathering of friends, and a well-situated Domain.

From a glance at railway bookings it would appear that the season commences this coming week-end. Yesterday, however, and in spite of the threatening weather, a happy day -was spent by a party of nearly 600 people, when the Oxford Oddfellows organised a trip to Ashburton. Timaru will .be visited by another large party, ab6ut 900 strong, on Saturday. This will be the annual picnic 'df the Dunsandel-Greendale Friendly Societies, and the coi bined schools. Other otitings fixed for Saturday are the Leeston combined schools and Friendly Societies' trip to Kaiapoi, the Spreydon Baptist Sunday School's picnic at Stewart's G.'-lly, and the St. Mary's Sunday School's visit to Lyttelton. ' For next .Sunday week the Kailway Department ax.e arranging two excursions that should prove very popular. A special train will be run to Timaru from Dune'diri to meet the usual excursion from Christchurch there. Those who have friends "in the other city will accordingly .be able to make arrangements to spend' the day together in Timaru.
