ART GALLERY.
SUPERVISING ARCHITECT.
MR W. H. TBBNGROVE TO CARRY ON. The appointment of Mr W. H. Trdiigrove as supervising architect for the erection ol' tho McDougall Art Gallery was approved at last night's meeting of the City Council. The appointment has been made in consequence of Mr E. W. Armstrong, the architect who drew the winning plans, having to return shortly to England. Exception to the appointment was taken by Cr. \V. Williamson, who stated that several local architects had submitted designs. He asked whether Mr Trongrove had done so. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) ! I cannot answer the question. I have forgotten who tho local architects were who submitted designs. Cr. Williamson moved that the clause be held over to enable enquiries to be made. Ho thought it only fair that those who had submitted designs should have the opportunity of carrying on the work. tfhe Mayor said that he did not think it would be wise that the position should be given to a man who was probably an unsuccessful competitor against Mr Armstrong. Cr. J. W. Beanland explained that the architect always had tho right to nominate another architect to act for him in hi* absence. This was the custom which had been followed in this case. Mr Armstrong had this right under the conditions of the competition The condHions were looked up, and proved that the Jury of Award was the body which decided who should carry out the work in tho absence of the architect.
The Mayor having stated that Mr irengrove had appeared before that jury and had beon accepted, Mr Williamson withdrew his amendment and the clause waa adopted.
