ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY
FINAL CONCERT OF SEASON
Th« final subscription conceit for 1900 takes place at the Radiant Hall on Thursday evening nest, when the full orchestra of 65 instrumentalists, under the conductorship of Professor O. Savini, will present a programme of unusual variety and of outstanding merit. The Symphony on this occasion No. 3 (Scotch), the last two movements of which are being played. A new composition by Mr R. A. Home, in Memoriam," a tone poem in memory of (and dedicated to) the late Mr G. H. Bonnington, will bo performed. This work has all the qualities which will make for perpetuity, being richly scored for full orchestra, and has the massive grandeur and melodic appeal which characterises some of the great fune* braic classics which have lived through the aS Saint-Saens t "Dance Maccabre," the difficult but very colourful impressionistic creation of the gifted French composer-organist, is presented by the Society for the time; likewise Edward Macdowell's "Sea Songa*'— a cycle of six movements, all strikingly characteristic of the subject upon which they were conceived. Nicolai's tuneful overture from "Merry Wives of Windsor, Coleridge Taylor's stirring military march from the "Othello" suite, and a selection from "Madame Butterfly"—Puccini's famous Japanese opera—make up a worth-while interesting orchestral programme. The vocalist is Mr W. Toomey, a baritone of richness and sonority whoso numbers are of the order which will give scope to his temperai ment and artistry. The box plan opens at I The Bristol on Monday morning.
