WAITAKI WORKS CAMP.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE FRESS. Sir, —A lot has been written of late about the foundation of the dam now in the course of erection on the VVaitaki River. _ I would like to draw attention to the state of the sanitation at the camp at these works. It is one of the largest camps in New Zealand, but no drainage system is installed here. Sump holes are provided to take garbage, and it is allowed to lie aud rot in the open The top part of the crunp drains on to the lower portion of the camp. Tourists on their journey to Omaruma may have noticed the foul smell nt the cookhouse: also the drainage from the huts on the main highway. 1 consider that if the sanitary arrangements are not attended to at once, we will have an epidemic.—Yours, etc., NOTE OF WARNING. Waimate, November 19th. 1930. [The Public Works camps lie on the south side of the Waitaki river, in the Otago health district, and therefore fall°outside the province of the Canterbury authorities. However, Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, the District Health Officer, when this letter wa<s referred to him, said that the Public Works camps were very well run as a whole.
