On a perfect wicket, in sultry weather, the West Indicß cricket team made its Australian debut, playing against New South Wales. The visiting batsmen created a favourable impression, but appeared to be short of practice. Tho opening batsmen gave the side a good start, adding 62 in 90 minutes before lunch, without loss. Roach, revealed some excellent strokes. Fairfax caused a stir after the adjournment, when he clean-bowled Roach and Bartlett in one over. Headley showed himself to be the stylist of the team, scoring 25 in quick time. The first wicket fell tor 64, and with Hcadlcy's dismissal four wickets were down for 05. Grant and Birkett then became associated in a partnership of 56 runs. COll- - who immediately became a favourite with the crowd, treated them to a splendid exhibition of batting and running. In the latter department, his team-mates have a great deal to learn. McCabo secured the wickets of Constantino and Francis in one over. Both were out to good catches. The tail failed and tho side iva3 out for 18S. Oldfield was never seen to better advantage behind the wickets, claiming si:-: victims. The visitors were r.t sea against tho slow bowling, and Oldfitdd was quick to seize his opportunities. In tiie hour before stumps were drawn, New South Wales scored 71 for two wickets.
