BEAUTIFYING THE CITY

MEETING OP, EXECUTIVE OP ASSOCIATION. The executive of the Christchurch Beautifying Association met last night. Present: Messrs A. K. England (in the chair), H. Tillman, 6. W. Bradley, and Cr. Annie Fraer. Apologies for absence were received from the chairman (Mr A. Dudley Dobson) and Mr E. H. Andrews. The chairman welcomed Cr. Annie Fraer, representing the Reserves Committee of the City Council, who attended an executive meeting for the first time. The secretary (Mr S. P. Marshall) reported that as an outcome of the well-attended annual meeting many of those present, had come forward and enrolled as members. Regarding the proposed booklet it had been suggested that there would be a better chance of its being successful if its publication were deferred , for two months. . Ft was agreed to defer publication. Reporting on the proposed street collection the secretary said that the City Council was prepared to give the necessary permission, and he had suggested Wednesday, July 80th, but this was only tentative. He was making arrangements for helpers, but more were needed. Mrs Fraer undertook to arrange for some, additional helpers. A discussion took place regarding the erection of the six ornamental electric lamps provided by the Association. It was decided to make representations to the Reserves Committee regard' the incorporation of the lamps in any scheme of lighting of Victoria square, in conjunction with Bowker Memorial Fountain and the Cook Statue. Messrs Tillman and Marshall were appointed a deputation to wait on the Reserves Committee to ■liscuss the matter.

Reference was made to the approaching erection of the Bowker Memorial Fountain, and to the fact that the \ssocintion had expressed its approval of a fountain of the design decided unon.

It was decided to wr'te to the Bow'cer Trust, expressing the Association's appreciation of the action taken.
